Murwillumbah ACC road race

Bald mountain, July 28, 2001

By Phil Ruge

A total of just 37 riders lined up on a windy afternoon to contest the weekly road race conducted by the Murwillumbah Amateur Cycle Club on Saturday 28 July 2001.

Racing this weekend was over the Bald Mountain course. This 55 kilometre race takes riders out through the hills to Bald Mountain and then across to Numinbah before returning to finish on Urliup Road at Dulguigan.

Due to the small number of riders both A and B Grades were combined this week. Despite a strong headwind on the outward part of the course a fast pace split the group up before Bald Mountain. There were a number of unsuccessful attempts to bring the race back together again which left small groups to fight out the finish. In A Grade it was C. Cahill first from D. Costanza with L. Russell third whilst in B Grade L. Stewart was victorious with R. Roberts second and J. Evangelista in third place.

C Grade boasted the biggest field of the afternoon with 14 riders. This group maintained a quick tempo throughout the race which was enough to shed a couple of riders in the hills. However, the remaining riders kept together for the rest of the race. A late attack saw S. Chambers take first place followed by ïfastÍ F. Mason with S. Ellick hot on his heels for third spot.

A reasonably fast pace in D Grade again saw the small group of riders contesting this race split up once into the hills beyond Chillingham. The remaining riders settled in though and didnÍt allow anyone to get away before the finish. In the sprint for the line the experienced T. Allen got the better of R. Tombillis with R. Davis crossing in third place.

A small group of just 6 riders started in E Grade. This group included 2 women - Val Lombard and Michelle Ede - who were right in there mixing with the men. However the wind and hills proved too much for Val who had already raced that morning and she and another rider were dropped on the way into Bald Mountain. The surviving riders shared the work evenly through the rest of the race but were stretched by a late surge by T. Angelo for the line. Not to be outdone the ïColnago KidÍ J. Higgins reeled him in with about 100 metres to go to take first with Angelo second and Ede coming across the line for a well deserved third place

Several club members were absent at the Cunningham Classic this day. C. Reston rode a great race to take second place in the Masters A Division whilst G. Harvey took a creditable sixth place in the Masters B Division. Other riders also performed well and whilst not taking any places put in a good effort to complete what was a very difficult race in cold and windy conditions.

Racing next week is the monthly handicap over the Tyalgum ïout and backÍ course. Start time is 2.00 pm and riders are asked to be early to assist the handicapper.

Randwick Botany Cycling Club

Heffron Park, July 29, 2001

By Tony Horneman

Passing light showers, with sunny breaks and 40kmh winds tested the keen Randwick Botany Cycling Club senior and junior riders in the Time Trial series held at Heffron Park, Maroubra on Sunday 29 July 2001.

The first event was a Senior 2km Time Trial, or one lap around the Heffron Park circuit. Fourteen riders lined up with Chris White recording the fastest time of 3 minutes 3 seconds in the gusty wet conditions. Matthew Lucas came second with a time of 3 minutes 10 seconds and third fastest was Jason Webb, 3 minutes 15 seconds.

The 6km Handicap race presented an opportunity for any of the senior riders to claim a place. Mark Robertson rode strongly to claim first place with a time of 9 minutes 59 seconds. Chris White was second and Matthew Lucas third. The fastest time was recorded by Chris White, 9 minutes 45 seconds.

The 6km all-in Scratch Race included senior and U17 junior riders. The race commissaire directed riders to stay `neutral' for the first 2 laps of the 3-lap race. This meant that no rider was allowed to break away within the first 2 laps. The start of the last lap saw an explosive breakaway from junior riders Keegan Aitchison and Chris Jenkins. Senior riders Chris White and Matthew Lucas along with Mark Robertson bridged the gap to the junior riders 1000m from home. With 400m to go Lucas attacked with White following close behind into a 40kmh headwind. Chris White edged ahead in the exciting sprint to cross the line first in a time of 15 minutes 17 seconds. Matthew Lucas claimed second and Mark Robertson third.

The 2km Junior Time Trial was taken out by under 17 rider Chris Jenkins in a time of 3 minutes 15 seconds. Keegan Aitchison was second fastest in a time of 3 minutes 35 seconds with Thomas Murdoch third in 3 minutes 45 seconds.

The Junior 2km Handicap Race was also won by Chris Jenkins, with Keegan Aitchison seconds and Tyrone Davies third.

The Under 13 junior riders competed in a 2km Scratch Race which was won by Tyrone Davies in a time of 4 minutes 51 seconds followed by James Warne and Raphael Rosse. After the race, 9 year old Rosse said it was a hard race in the strong wind. "One day I hope to be like (Australian Tour-de-France rider) Stuart O'Grady" Rosse added.

The next Randwick Botany Cycling Club race will be conducted at Heffron Park on Saturday 11 August 2001. Juniors start at 1.30pm and Seniors 2.30pm. For more information about the club, please contact the club secretary Helen Vella on 02 9667 3307.
