De Jongh wins for the second time

Rabobank's Steven de Jongh has won the 209 kilometre Veenendaal-Veenendaal classic for the second time in a row, escaping from an 11 man top group in the final kilometre. Rudi Kemna (Bankgiroloterij-Batavus) took the bunch sprint.

The organisers had to use a slightly modified parcours due to the Foot and Mouth crisis, but the race still went ahead, unlike others in the Netherlands that have been cancelled. The weather conditions weren't great though, with wind, hail and snow accompanying the riders during the 209 kilometre race. As such only 30 of the 170 starters actually finished.

Three riders, Steven de De Jongh (Rabobank), Bart Voskamp (Batavus) and Paul van Schalen (Cologne) attacked out of the leading group, gaining a maximum of 30 seconds. They were caught, a little at a time, by another 9 riders. De Jongh attacked again shortly before the finish, and came in 3 seconds in front of Rudi Kemna (Batavus), with Roger Hammond (Collstrop) taking third.
