Italian Endrio Leoni (Alessio) has won his second Grote Scheldeprijs in a row, beating Jeroen Blijlevens (Lotto) in a carbon copy finish to last year. Despite numerous breaks, the race came together for a bunch sprint and Leoni's Alessio team proved to be an excellent launch pad for the in-form Italian sprinter. A sunny but slightly windy day greeted the field for the 89th edition of this traditionally flat and fast race. The main difficulties were several cobbled sections, and the speed at which the race was run. At a 45 km/h average, it was important to stay near the front, as riders of the calibre of Erik Zabel found to their disadvantage.
The breaks went non-stop, with an eight man group forming after 28 kilometres, with sprinter Robbie McEwen (Domo) and Frank Hoj (Coast) as the most notable riders. They reached a maximum of four minutes by kiloemtre 50, as the peloton weren't interested in chasing that early. After this, things got going and they werre caught before 100 kilometres. Lotto and Mercury drove up the tempo, as Frank Vandenbroucke (Lampre) suffered at the back and was dropped. He wasn't the only one though, as Telekom's Erik Zabel also found himself in the second group. With 80 kilometres to go, a front group of 50 riders or so had firmly established itself, with most of the sprinters (Blijlevens, Leoni, Van Bon, Zanini, Quaranta, Rodriguez, De Jongh) present. From then on, it was a case of Alessio, Lotto and Mercury keeping the tempo high to try and discourage attacks from riders like Ludo Dierckxsens (Lampre) who certainly tried. With three laps of the 15 kilometre finishing circuit to go, the peloton was still compact, although there were still plenty of riders willing to test their legs out in front.
A dangerous break containing Van Petegem (Mercury), Van de Wouwer and Blijlevens (Lotto), Knaven (Domo), Peers (Cofidis), and Guns (Vlaanderen) escaped with one lap (15 km) to go, and they managed a 10 second lead for a few kilometres. Alessio eventually got rolling and chased them down, and things looked set for another mass sprint in Schoten. With 4 kilometres to go, Corey Sweet (Batavus) had other ideas, shooting off the front, pursued by Ludo Dierckxsens (Lampre), Leon van Bon (Mercury), Wilfried Peeters (Domo), Stefano Casagranda and Andrea Ferrigato (Alessio). Sweet's move was good, but the Alessio riders were not going to work in the break, and it all came together with 2 kilometres left. The only rain shower of the day happened right on the finish line with 1 kilometre left, but it didn't dampen the lead out of Alessio. The blue/red train put Endrio Leoni into a winning position once again, and Jeroen Blijlevens could do nothing as Leoni kept his wheel in front for the final 200 metres. In third place was Fakta sprinter, Kurt-Asle Arvesen, who finished just in front of US Champion Fred Rodriguez.
