Kupfernagel starts strongly

The Vuelta Internacional a Mallorca (UCI 2.9.1) is the first important stage race on the European women's calendar. There are many athletes starting who are well ranked in the UCI classifications, and the field numbered 103 km.

The first stage contained one climb, the Col de Sa Batalla, which saw Trixi Worrack (Red Bull) and Edita Pucinskaite (Alfa Lum) cross first. However, they were caught by 25 others on the descent, and this group stayed together to contest the sprint in Sineu.

After a long wind-up, Hanka Kupfernagel (Farm Frites-Hartol) scored her first victory in 2001, beating Monica Valen and Trixi Worrack.
