Napa Valley - MTB World Cup #1

USA, April 7 & 8, 2001

Preview

As in previous year's the MTB World Cup kicks off in the wine-growing region of California's Napa Valley, and for the second time our host is the Domain Chandon winery and vineyards, 14km North of Napa.

So far only one major mountain bike race has attracted the international riders: Sea Otter. From that race the men in form are Bart Brentjens (Giant), Roland Green (Trek/VW) and Bas van Dooren (Specialized) and the women's early-season strength resides in Barbara Blatter and Caroline Alexander (both Specialized) and Alison Dunlap (GT).

But it's by no means easy to judge this early in the season. Miguel Martinez (Full Dynamix), the reigning World Cup champion, didn't ride at Sea Otter, and Cadel Evans (Volvo Cannondale) will be highly motivated to attack the title he held in 1999 but lost last year after an early-season collarbone break wrecked his chances.

This year's Napa race sees an interesting innovation: a qualifying time trial on Saturday to determine the start grid. The idea is to allocate start grid places according to the current form of the riders. In the past, the grid has followed the riders' UCI standings, a system that rewarded consistency. The new system will also reward ridrs whose talents are suited to a particular course.
