As the sun almost dared to shine on the competitors in Plouay, the espoir (U23) men set about burning up the tarmac on the road from Plouray to Plouay. The final result was a coup for super-team Mapei, who have already signed the top three of the men's U23 podium for next season. Russian Evgeni Petrov lived up to his number one seeding, taking 43'54 (48.1 km/h) to complete the 35.2 kilometre course. In second was dual junior world champion in this discipline, Fabian Cancellara (Swi) at 52 seconds, while third went to last year's silver medallist, Michael Rogers of Australia. The conditions were far from ideal for all the competitors as they set off in driving rain and wind. The early pace was set by Spaniard, David Herrero (46'21), with Irishman David O'Loughlin 11 seconds behind him. They were gradually moved down the list as Marius Sabaliauskas (Ltu) and Italian Cristian Cantarini (Ita) were several seconds faster. However, apart from German Torsten Heikmann, the final five starters were the ones to watch. Australian Mick Rogers went under Sabaliauskas time by 38 seconds, with a 45'14 that stood for nearly three minutes until Fabian Cancellara came in with 44'46. American Dave Zabriskie, starting second last could not better these two times and had to be content with fourth. He actually finished last as Petrov, setting the quickest times at every check, caught him and became the only rider to go under 44 minutes by the finish. The Russian U23 (and elite) time trial champion was happy with the course, saying that its technical sections and false flats suited his style, although he came into the race a little tired after Sydney.
