Polish born, but part-time Canadian resident, Peter (Piotr) Mazur showed exactly why he is the world's number one junior male cyclist, after he took out today's World Championship time trial from Le Croisty to Plouay. Winner of the Junior Peace Race and the Tour de l'Abitibi in Canada this year, Mazur was too fast for Russia's Vladimir Goussev and Mazur's Polish teammate, Lukasz Bodnar. In fourth place was promising Australian rider, Rory Sutherland. French favourite and last to start, Romain Genter, was off the pace all day and finished 7th.

On another terrible day as far as the weather conditions were concerned, the 65 riders in the junior field set off from Le Croisty. Although there was some sun at the start, in Plouay it was storming as has been the case for the past few days. Kiwi Jeremy Yates set the tempo early on - he started 8th but his time of 32.27.40 held for quite some time until the final 25 riders started. Australian Rory Sutherland (no. 24) beat Yates' time by 50 seconds, setting the new benchmark, but 10 minutes later, Pole Lukasz Bodnar wiped 10 seconds off Sutherland's time.

Save for rider number 7, Vladimir Goussev, the final 10 could not come close to either Sutherland and Bodnar's time. Goussev moved into the lead for a short time with a 31.16.70, but behind him Peter Mazur was blazing through the intermediate checks with the lowest times. He finished under 31 minutes, averaging nearly 47.5 km/h, just catching his minute man, David Muntaner Juaneda (Spa) before the line. Only one rider to come, and that was Romain Genter, but he had fallen off the pace and finished 54 seconds behind Mazur.

This will surely give Mazur the definitive World number one ranking, with just one race to come in the 14 (reduced to 13) race series: the World Road Race title on Saturday. Mazur will go into that as favourite as well, as the tough Jean-Yves Perron circuit will certainly suit him.

He has raced this year with sponsorship and the full support of the New York based Kissena cycling team in senior events, on occasion competing with Hot Tubes when a junior team entry was required.
