Serpellini wins Milano-Vignola

The last of four Italian classics this week, Milano-Vignola (GP Beghelli), was won by Lampre's Marco Serpellini, capping off a strong week for the team. Last Tuesday, they placed 1-2 in the GP Prato (Barbero and Missaglia), while yesterday Gilberto Simoni and Massimo Codol repeated the feat in the Giro dell Emilia.

Serpellini was the strongest at the end of a fast race (45+ km/h average), attacking with 800 metres to go to beat Romans Vainsteins (Vini Caldirola) and Chann McRae (Mapei). With the win, Serpellini hoped to confirm his status in the Italian team to contest the World Championships in Plouay in three weeks time. He said that he needed the win to overcome the disappointment of Lampre missing out on the Tour de France this year, one of his major goals.

Before the start of the race, 24 riders were blood tested by the UCI. All were found to be negative.
