Race Report

Boogerd does the Double

By Tomas Nilsson, cyclingnews.com correspondent

What a weekend for Michael Boogerd. On Saturday he won his first Italian race in the Giro dell'Emilia, and on Sunday he also won the Milano - Vignola. The 27 year-old Dutchman took hold of the Race with 28 km to go, when a group of 14 riders went off. One by one the riders dropped from the group when finally only four riders remained with Boogerd (Rabobank) - Alexander Vinokourov (Casino), Dario Frigo (Saeco) and Riccardo Forconi (Mercatone Uno).

Just like the day before Boogerd didn't wait for the sprint but attacked and finally crossed the line almost a minute ahead of Vinokourov and the Italians.

With this Boogerd naturally is one of the favourites for the rainbow jersey in two weeks.. The last Dutch world champion was Joop Zoetemelk, also in Italy in 1985 - a good omen for Boogerd?

" Yes, I've heard about Zoetemelk's victory a couple of times," said Boogerd. "Now I have only one desire: To race in Verona in the same shape I'm in right now"
