Preview
This race is sometimes called the "mini Tour of Flanders" so maybe
it suites Belgians like Andrej Tchmil (Lotto) or Peter van Petegem (Farm
Frites), the last two winner in the real thing. Two earlier winners
will take the start: Title defender Lauri Aus and Swedish Magnus Bäckstedt
who won in 1997 at age 22. Farm Frites has a strong team where van Petegem
is accompanied by Russian Champion Ivanov and German Andreas Klier.
Other strong outfits: Cofidis with Farazijn and Mattan, Palmans with
Bruylandts and van Dyck, US postal with Hincapie , Vasseur and Andreu.
The parcours offer sixteen climbs, the final difficulty is the d'Estrée
Blanche as far as 39 kilometres from the finish in Isbergues.
