With the absence of the Olympic silver medallists Ukraine, as well as the withdrawal of German strongman, Robert Bartko, it was expected that Great Britain and France would rise to the occasion. The British team of Manning, Wiggins, Newton and Steel, riding on their home ground, managed just under 4:07 for their qualifying run, the fastest of the morning. They were followed by France (4:07.19), Germany (4:07.48) and Russia (4:12.39). The top eight advanced through to the quarter finals later that day, and all four teams had no problem in overcoming their rivals. All of the opponents (Netherlands, Spain, Poland and the Czech Republic) were caught by the above teams, and all went faster in the evening. Britain and Germany both rode under 4:03, setting things up for an interesting finals series tomorrow. Silver went to Spain's Juan Llaneras and Isaac Galvez (the defending champions), with Argentina's Curuchet brothers taking bronze. The two Germans set the shape of the race when they took a lap on the field about a quarter of the way into the race. Weispfenning and Steinweg would probably not have raced together in this event if top German six-day man Andreas Kappes had not tested positive for nandrolone earlier this summer. Kappes faces a probable two-year ban from the German federation. With 80% of this season's six-day races taking place in Germany, Steinweg and Weisspfennig can look forward to a lucrative winter season. And, judging by the big smiles on their faces, a happy one.
