49th Herald Sun Tour - 2.4Australia, October 5-15, 2000Main page Results Previous stage John Lieswyn's diary Stage 9 - October 10: Shepparton Kermesse, 80 kmWohlberg takes lead as Cooke wins thirdAustralia Post's 'angry little man', Eric Wohlberg took the outright lead after today's 80 kilometre Shepparton kermesse, a 30 lap race with numerous sprints on offer. However, he did not need time bonuses to gain the jersey that Steve Williams (Caravello) has worn for the last two days - Williams lost nearly 20 seconds to the leading pack after yet another fast, aggressive race. The honours of the day went to Jayco's Baden Cooke, who beat Jeremy Hunt (Southern Grampians), and Ciaran Power (Latrobe) to take his third stage win in the tour so far. He benefitted from the work of his team, who placed Jamie Drew in an early break with three others - Peter Wrolich (City of Melbourne) and Corey Sweet (Southern Grampians) - but then chased it down through the efforts of Henk Vogels after Drew sat up. The gap of 1'10 was reduced to zero with 10 laps to go, and Jayco kept the tempo high along with Australia Post until the finish. Over the final few laps, Czech Tomas Konecny (Active for Life) took out several sprint bonuses to move himself closer to the top of the GC, but didn't quite figure in the final sprint. Once again, 22 year old Baden Cooke showed that he was the fastest sprinter in the race by taking the win almost on 'home' turf. Cooke hails from nearby Benalla, and he was well supported today by his family and friends. Victorian Institute of Sport coach, Dave Sanders, believes that Cooke has great potential for the future, having started this year with Mercury. "He has been ultra impressive riding overseas." As for Wohlberg, he has to survive another six stages to take the overall classification in the Sun Tour, and has an excellent chance of doing so. His favourite event, the time trial, is on Thursday (Stage 11) but he believes that there are a bucketload of riders that he has to look out for, including Konecny, Eugene Wacker (Echuca) and of course Scott Moninger (Jayco). In other news, US rider Antonio Cruz (Malaysia Airlines) became the first rider to withdraw from the race but it was not through an injury or mishap. He was given a call this morning by the US Cycling Federation to fly to Paris for the World Championships this coming Sunday. Before the stage, Cruz was lying 7th at 30 seconds down.
