49th Herald Sun Tour - 2.4Australia, October 5-15, 2000Main page Results Previous stage John Lieswyn's Diary Stage 8 - October 9: Bright - Beechworth, 90.9 kmA great day for the IrishIrishman Aidan Duff (Latrobe City) capped off a great day for himself and the team by taking stage 8 into Beechworth after a successful lone attack. Fourth in this morning's stage, Duff was alone for the last 50 kilometres, with the next best riders being Czech Tomas Konecny (Active for Life) and Duff's teammate, Ciaran Power. Aggressive was the word that described the stage, a 91 kilometre leg from Bright to Beechworth. The morning's 49 kilometre kermesse did not seem to take much out of the peloton, and the attacks started from the gun. With small time bonuses available for intermediate sprints and hillclimbs, the aggression was understandable as only seconds separate the top riders in the tour so far. At first a break of three formed, which grew to seven and then ten riders. Aidan Duff (Latrobe), Andy De Smet (Foster's) and John Lieswyn (Australia Post) were all in, and they gained up to 2 minutes at one point which put De Smet in the virtual leader's jersey. After 40 kilometres in perfect conditions, Aidan Duff attacked strongly and no-one followed. In a gallant ride, he stayed away to win alone in Beechworth, while his teammate Power moved himself up the GC by taking third. This was the result of a late move on the final climb which also saw Scott Moninger take some time out of Wohlberg. In addition to Duff's fourth place this morning, the Irish team were aggressive in the sprints with David McCann and Tommy Evans featuring prominently. Belgian Andy de Smet (Foster's) was also active today, taking time out of the joint leaders Steve Williams and Eric Wohlberg to move into third overall. Tomorrow's stage is an 80 kilometre kermesse (circuit race) around Shepparton, but the riders do not have to back up with a second stage in the afternoon. Report courtesy of Rob Gaylard.
