49th Herald Sun Tour - 2.4Australia, October 5-15, 2000Main page Results Previous stage John Lieswyn's Diary Stage 6 - October 8: Bairnsdale - Mt Hotham, 174 kmDramatic stage sees race split apartToday's 174 kilometre stage from Bairnsdale to Mt Hotham was predicted to be the toughest of this year's Sun Tour, and perhaps the toughest in the race's 49 year history. With nine climbs including the 2000 metre Mt Hotham to finish, it was expected that there would be some significant time gaps. The bunch started to split after approximately 70 kilometres when the attacks and the climbs started to take their toll. Race leader Henk Vogels has been riding quite strongly in the tour so far, but today suited his Jayco/Mercury teammate Scott Moninger, who is a formidable climber. However Moninger either overestimated his abilities or underestimated the nature of the stage when he jumped clear from the leading group with 25 kilometres to go. Along with Josh Collingwood (Ballarat-Eureka) and Trent Wilson (Custom Fleet ) he managed to gap the field by 1'43 at one point, and the stage (and perhaps the race) looked set to be his. With 12 kilometres to go, he hit the dreaded wall that so many riders have experienced and ran out of fuel. The other two continued on without the contributions of Moninger, but started to lose time quickly. Their lead shrank to 1 minute at 8 kilometres to go, then 40 seconds when Steve Williams (Caravello) bridged up to the flagging trio. Williams may not be as well credentialled as Moninger but the NSW rider is renowned for his climbing strength, winning the KOM in this year's Tatt's Cup series (qualifying races for the Sun Tour). After Williams caught Moninger, the American tried to stay on his wheel without success, and Williams soloed to the stage win. Close behind and surprising many was US Olympic road team member, Antonio Cruz (Malaysia Airlines) who almost caught Williams to take second place. Canadian Eric Wohlberg put in a strong ride to finish with the leaders, and he now holds the equal lead of the Sun Tour along with Williams. Cruz is third at 30 seconds, while Vogels dropped to 28th after finishing 13 minutes down today. Tomorrow is another split day, with a morning kermesse in Bright (49 km) and an afternoon stage from Bright to Beechworth (91 km). Thanks to Rob Gaylard for the report.
