49th Herald Sun Tour - 2.4Australia, October 5-15, 2000Main page Results Previous stage John Lieswyn's Diary Stage 5 - October 7: Korumburra - Traralgon, 90.5 kmCooke repeatsBaden Cooke won his second stage in two days to take stage 5 from Korumburra to Traralgon. The 90 kilometre stage was marked by many attacks, however the finish saw the bunch intact. Irishman David McCann (Latrobe Valley) was the most successful of the attackers, trying desperately to win in the team's sponsors home territory. However, he was swallowed up with 5 kilometres to go, setting things up for a mass sprint. Race leader Henk Vogels (Jayco) was having none of this, and attacked with 2 kilometres to go, gaining a 10 second margin. His teammate Baden Cooke, who is one of the up and coming stars of Australian cycling, saw the move but didn't chase and tried to control the peloton. Henk had gone too far out and couldn't sustain his speed and the pack caught him as well. However, his teammate Cooke sprinted to the win from Belgian Andy De Smet (Foster's) and Austrian Peter Wrolich (City Of Melbourne) The outcome was that Vogels still leads Eric Wohlberg by 36 seconds after five stages, with Cooke in third place. However, this is expected to change drastically tomorrow with the feared Bairnsdale to Mt Hotham stage. 174 kilometres, with over 3000 metres of climbing culminating in MT Hotham itself. The racing is expected to suit Vogels' teammate, Scott Moninger who won this race in 1996. Vogels weighs 80kg and Moninger closer to 50, but there are plenty of others in the pack willing to take them on. As for Vogels, "If I get a top 5 or 6, I'll be stoked."
