Eugen Wacker has won the 49th edition of the Herald Sun Tour after his team easily managed to control the peloton in the final stage, a 44 kilometre criterium around the streets of Geelong. Held on a tough, windy 2.2 kilometre circuit, the race went to Australian Champion, Jamie Drew (Jayco) after he and two others had attacked in the early part of the race. With two hills per lap, strong winds and a depleted peloton, most were thinking of the showers afterwards than riding flat out for an hour or so. There are always exceptions, and Jamie Drew (Jayco), Petr Bencik (Active for Life) and Tommy Evans (Latrobe City) took advantage of the situation and attacked after two laps. Their gap grew to 20 seconds, then a minute with nine laps to go, as the two strongest teams in the bunch - Jayco and Echuca Moama - had no interest in chasing them down. With 5 laps to go, their lead was 1:48 and there it stayed until Jayco started the train to try and snag fourth place. Up front, Jamie Drew was simply too strong for Bencik and Evans, and added another stage win to Jayco's palmares bringing their total to five in this tour. For 26 year old Eugen Wacker from Krygystan, the overall win was the result of consistent hard riding from his Echuca-Moama team; Dariuz Skoczylas (Pol), Grzegorz Wajs (Pol), Pawel Niedzwiecki (Pol) and Remigius Lupeikis (Ltu). For most of the year they compete as part of the Mroz-Supradyn team, who are well known for dominating the lower ranked tours. It was no surprise that they won the team's classification. In the other classifications, Baden Cooke (Jayco) easily won the criterium points score; Irishmen Aidan Duff and Dave McCann (Latrobe) took out the top positions in the most aggressive rider awards; Dan Smith (Caravello) put an impressive performance to win the sprint championship; Remigius Lupeikis (Echuca Moama) won the mountains classification and one-time yellow jersey holder, Steve Williams (Caravello) was the best Australian based rider.
