49th Herald Sun Tour - 2.4Australia, October 5-15, 2000Main page Results Previous stage John Lieswyn's Diary Stage 12 - October 12: Bendigo Criterium, 21 kmWacker chips awayAlthough just 21 kilometres in length, the Bendigo evening criterium that was stage 12 of the Sun Tour was full of action. Held in front of a huge crowd in the town's centre, the 30 lap race saw Australia Post's Eric Wohlberg lose 3 seconds of his lead that he had gained in the morning's time trial. Best placed Australian, Josh Collingwood (Eureka*Ballarat) was the first to attack, trying to gain a few sprint bonuses to move himself toward's Tomas Konecny's 4th GC spot. He was successful for a while, taking a couple of sprints before the field chased him down. Particularly aggressive were the Jayco team, who were trying to set up Scott Moninger for the same bonuses. However, wherever they went, Australia Post followed and Moninger could not gain any advantage. One rider who did was Echuca Moama's Eugene Wacker, who attacked two thirds of the way through the race to steal not one, but two three second bonuses. Fortunately for Eric Wohlberg, the Canadian managed to pick up a second and a first place, to reduce his loss to just three seconds by the finish. The finale was a bunch sprint, an Australia Post were in the thick of it again, leading out Dave McCook for a hard earned win. McCook is the 'lanterne rouge' (last rider on GC) and has been suffering all through the tour. Today was his day though, as he beat Latrobe's Ciaran Power and Southern Grampians' Jeremy Hunt for the victory. With three stages to go, Wohlberg leads the danger man Wacker by 19 seconds, and it will certainly be a fight right up until the final lap in Geelong on Sunday. Courtesy of Rob Gaylard.
