49th Herald Sun Tour - 2.4Australia, October 5-15, 2000Main page Results Previous stage John Lieswyn's diary Stage 10 - October 11: Euroa - Echuca-Moama, 189.3 kmPolish win in long haulThe longest stage of the Sun Tour was the 189.5 kilometre leg from Euroa to Echuca-Moama, and the conditions were ripe for a long breakaway - blue, sunny skies, and a tailwind for the last 80 kilometres saw three riders stay away for the majority of the stage. Today's winner was Poland's Dariusz Skoczylas who scored a 'home' win for his team, Echuca-Moama. He beat Australian Nick Gates (Southern Grampians) with British rider Dan Smith (Caravello) taking third. The three had attacked from the start, and as the best placed was Nick Gates (48th at 32 minutes down), they were allowed a lot of freedom by the peloton. At one stage, their lead opened out to 10 minutes before the bunch chased under the impetus of the Jayco squad. By the end, it was closer to three minutes but there was no danger of them being caught after a tailwind pushed them virtually for the last half of the race. The overall classification stayed the same, with Canadian Eric Wohlberg (Australia Post) retaining his 15 second lead to Irishman Ciaran Power (Latrobe) and Czech Tomas Konecny (Active for life). Tomorrow's 25 km Rochester time trial will suit Wohlberg and Konecny, and Australian Josh Collingwood may move himself up in the standings. Finally, Australian Brad McGee became the second rider to withdraw from the tour after suffering from achilles tendonitis. McGee was the winner of stage seven, the Bright Kermesse.
