Round 4 of the Women's World Cup will see one of the strongest fields yet contesting the 100 kilometre circuit race in Montreal, Canada. Following a short break after La Fleche Wallone, in Belgium (April 12), there will be two rounds of the series in America. Following the Montreal race will be the keenly anticipated First Union Liberty Classic in the USA on June 4.

Current World Cup leader, Diana Ziliute (Acca Due O) is at the top of the list of the field of 86 riders, and she will bring a strong team with her. Tatiana Stiajkina (Ukr), Marion Clignet (Fra) and the Polikeviciute twins and Urbanaite Zita from Lithuania are always a formidable opposition, but there is plenty of quality in this field. 1999 winner, Tracey Gaudry (Timex) will be defending her title with the help of her Timex teammates, Mari Holden, Kim Smith, Odessa Gunn and Sanna Lehtimaki, all of whom have been riding well of late.

Anna Wilson (Saturn) will be amongst the favourites, but the race finishes with an uphill sprint which may well give a different result than expected should a large group arrive at the end of 12 laps. Wilson has a powerful squad behind her with Susy Pryde, Lyne Bessette, Julie Hanson and Dede Demet.

Canadian favourite, Geneviève Jeanson will probably have to rely on her own power to win the race, however she has proved several times already this year that she is up to the task. This course will not suit her as much as Fleche Wallone, but it is somewhat hillier than the course in Canberra where she could not escape the field.

The in form Pia Sundstedt and Fabiana Luperini (GAS Sport) will be coming off their 1-2 in the recent Giro del Trentino Adige and again have a strong supporting team. Jean Paul Van Poppel's Dutch team will be here with Mirjam Melchers, Mirella Van Melis and Chantal Beltman, and Melchers is always a good bet for a place in the top 5.

The Canadian Elita team and the US Autotrader.com team will be riding their first World Cup race, and both are coming off some good form in national series races in the States. It will be an interesting battle on Sunday to say the least.

The course

The race is 102.4 kilometres long, consisting of 12 laps of an 8.3 kilometre circuit around Mont-Royal. It starts and finishes at the top of a 100 metre climb, the circuit's main obstacle. The race winds its way down Cote des Neiges along Remembrance Drive, past two cemeteries, before looping around Montreal University. The final climb up Camilien Houde is 1.5 kilometres long, at approximately 7 percent gradient, and will surely test the legs after 12 laps.
