5th Tour of Japan - 2.4Japan, May 21-28, 2000Main Page Results Previous stageStage 2 - May 22: Todaiji Temple - Nunome Dam Circuit, 146.2 kmWadecki grabs all the jerseysBy Miwako Sisaki* Polish rider Piotr Wadecki (Mroz-Supradyn), won the second stage of the Tour of Japan today, taking the overall green leader's jersey as well. In the monring before the stage, he said "today, nothing special!" regarding his tactics. He was right in that it was a 'nothing special' stage, a standard battle - which he won. 100 riders started in front of a structure which houses the huge statue of Buddha at the Todaiji Temple in the city of Nara, and the weather was cloudy but hot. For the first 25 km, from the Todaiji Temple to the Nunome Dam Circuit, it was neutralized (the riders were in formation and not racing due to traffic security reasons). When they reached the Nunome Dam Circuit (10.1km x 12 laps ), the race began. There was a mountain competition on the circuit, at 3 laps, 6 laps and 9 laps on the top of mountain. New Zealander Brendan Vesty, took the first mountain points, ahead of compatriot Bryce Shapley and Michael Rogers (Aus). However, on the second mountain sprint, Jacek Mickiewicz, who was wearing the overall green leader's jersey, jumped for the points and crossed the line first. After this, 11 riders attacked from the peloton: Mickiewicz, Wadecki, Stafiej (All Mroz), Haselbacher, Muhlbacher, McGrory (Gerolsteiner ), Bilek, Bencik (Wustenrot-ZVVZ), Shapley (NZl), Fukushima (Team Bridgestone Anchor), Shinbo (Sumita Ravanello Pearlizumi). The 11 riders worked well together, and at the third mountain sprint (9 laps), they had one minute and 15 seconds to the peloton. Wadecki, who was wearing the yellow sprint competition jersey, took first first place in the third mountain sprint. At 11 laps, Mickiewicz attacked first, and the non-Mroz riders tried to catch him. Then, Wadecki counterattacked behind them. Only The Austrian Haselbacher followed Wadecki, but he couldn't beat Wadecki at the finish line. At the ceremony of the 2nd stage, Wadecki wore 3 competition jerseys: the red mountain jersey, blue points jersey and the green overall jersey. Also he kept his yellow jersey, so now he monopolizes all the competition jerseys. "At Suzenji (stage 3, Wednesday ) I will lose these jerseys, but not the green jersey " said Wadecki at an official interview.
