5th Tour of Japan - 2.4Japan, May 21-28, 20001999 Results Start List Past Winners The Stages
Total: 868.8 km PreviewBy Miwako Sasaki The 5th Tour of Japan runs from Sunday, May 21 for a full week, ending May 28. It is a six stage race, with two rest/transfer days. This year, there will be one first Division and five second Division trade teams from Europe , 4 national teams, and 7 domestic club teams taking part in the race. Polish rider Piotr Wadecki (Mroz) who recently won the Peace Race, is one of the main favourites, coming 5th in this race in 1997. His team, Mroz-Supradyn, will not get number 1-6 in the race as these are not given out, even though they are the defending champions (Andrzej Sypytkowski won last year). They will again be very strong this year, with 18 victories to date in 2000. The Italian Alexia Alluminio team were disapointed with a non-start in the Giro, so they decided to come to Japan hoping that Nicola Minali will get a stage win . Of course, the Swiss Mauro Gianetti (Vini Caldirola) is another popular rider, as he won the Japan Cup in 1996 when it was a World Cup race), held on the same parcours as stage 5, at Utunomiya.
