Redlands Bicycle Classic - Cat. 2.5USA, March 7-12, 2000Prologue - March 7: Street Sprint, 200 metersReport - A downhiller does the roadies on the flatThe 16th annual Redlands Bicycle Classic kicked off in unique fashion with the Carousel Mall-San Bernardino Street Sprints, a 200 metre "prologue" which takes the shape of flat-out sprints down the main street, right under nose of the San Bernadino courthouse. And complimenting such uniqueness, the leader of the men's race heading into tomorrow's first real road stage is downhill MTBer Brian Lopes (Volvo/Cannodale) who set the fastest time riding a hard-tail Cannondale MTB fitted with road wheels. Ironically, Lopes was required to use a road bike for the finals and was actually beaten by Todd Littlehales of the Navigators squad, who earned the points leader's jersey with a 16.29 second final, while Lopez won the overall leader's jersey by virtue of his 15.95 second qualifying sprint down the main drag - riding a mountainbike. No other rider could match his qualifiying time so the downhiller won the yellow jersey. It seems the geometry and stiffness of the MTB allowed for a much faster start. It was a similar story in the women's event, although race leader Petra Rossner did use a road bike for her sprints. The awesome German sprinter set the fastest qualifiying time of 17.69 seconds but was then defeated in the final by Saturn team-mate Nicole Reinhart, with Tina Mayolo (AutoTrader.com) defeating Lyn Bessette (also from Saturn) for third place. The ride-off for third place in the men's sprint saw Polish rider Marcin Gebka (Mat-Ceresit) overcome US rider Shane Thellman.
