Redlands Bicycle Classic - Cat. 2.5USA, March 7-12, 2000Main Page Men's Results Women's Results Photo Page Stage 3 - March 10: Redlands-Oak Glen, 150 km (m)/Lake Matthews-Oak Glen, 106 km (w)By John Alsedek, cyclingnews.com correspondent Mercury puts the pressure on With the 7 UP/Colorado Cyclist duo of Clark Sheehan and David Zabriskie holding nearly a one-minute lead in G.C. over their nearest rivals, Dylan Casey of U.S. Postal Service and Chris Horner of Mercury, today was a make-or-break day. The top two American teams were determined that it be the latter. With that in mind, they started attacking early in the 93-mile Saturn Redlands-Oak Glen stage, placing Casey and sixth-placed Mercury man Henk Vogels into a 16-man break that took off around the 20-mile mark. They quickly gained a minute on the peloton, temporarily making Casey the race leader on the road, before the 7 UP/Colorado Cyclist team massed at the front and began riding a hard tempo, aided at times by ex-Colorado Cyclist prospect Michael Creed (Volvo/Cannondale). Their efforts pegged the break at about a minute for the next 40 miles or so, till the leading group began to come apart as it approached the foot of the 4,883-foot Oak Glen climb. It was a marvelous effort by the underdog 7 UP/Colorado Cyclist squad ("Everyone left everything on the road today", said an exhausted Jeff Corbett afterwards), leaving it up to Sheehan and Zabriskie once the ascent began. Race leader Sheehan was having an off day, and lost contact early on, as the Mercury team took over the pacemaking chores, setting things up for team leader Chris Horner; however, it wasn't long before Mercury, in turn, was being attacked by the Postal threesome of Levi Leipheimer, Marty Jemison, and David George. By the midway point, a five-man group had emerged, Horner, Leipheimer, George, Trent Klasna of Saturn, and Volvo/Cannondale's Cadel Evans, while Zabriskie, Michael Barry, and Chris Wherry (both Saturn) fought to stay in contact. With Horner driving hard at the front in an attempt to gain as much ground on Zabriskie as possible, Klasna took the opportunity to jump clear for the stage win, three seconds clear of Horner, with Evans two more seconds in arrears. Fourth place was taken by Barry, who bridged up to Leipheimer and George near the summit. When Zabriskie crossed the line in ninth place, 43 seconds back, the waiting began, as the race officials figured out whether he or Horner was the new race leader. The decision? The two riders were tied on time, but, since Horner had finished higher in the stage, he was awarded the leaders jersey. However, with two more stages to go, and with Trent Klasna nipping at their heels, just 25 seconds behind, the race is still wide open. Dunlap too strong By contrast, the womens event basically ended today, as GT's Alison Dunlap, who won the past two stages and held a 24-second lead over Saturn's Lynn Bessette, added a further minute to her cushion by the finish at the Oak Glen summit. The 66-mile event saw numerous attacks by the likes of AutoTrader.com, Charles Schwab, and Team Elita, but all of them came to naught, largely due to the efforts of an unlikely ally: the RLX Polo Sport mountain bike team. Repaying a debt to Dunlap from last year's Mercury Tour, Jimena Florit and her Polo Sport teammates covered every move that went up the road, allowing Dunlap to rest and prepare for the inevitable showdown with Bessette on the final climb. However, that showdown never came, as the lead group was soon whittled down to ten riders, and then it was just two. Dunlap found another familiar ally from off-road, Britain's Caroline Alexander. With Dunlap wanting to put as much time as possible between her and Bessette, and Alexander aiming strictly for the stage win, the two split the work evenly - Alexander even eased off a bit when Dunlap struggled during part of the climb. It worked out well for both parties: Alexander got the victory, 15 seconds up on Dunlap (she jumped away from the race leader just before the summit) and 45 seconds ahead of Leigh Hobson (Charles Schwab), while Dunlap now holds a solid 1:35 lead over Bessette, and a full two minutes on both Alexander and Hobson. The Redlands Classic continues Saturday with the 60-minute Beaver Medical Group Criterium. Pam Schuster's report I was so excited for today's race as it has always been one of my favorite. Usually this attitude helps me have a good day but even that doesn't always work in bike racing. It is all about details and when you are too lazy to change your year old cleats even before your favorite race, then problems can arise. So one mile into the race it looked like my training would involve one sixty-five mile one-legged interval. After a life saving idea from race leader Alison Dunlap, I requested tape from neutral to try to secure my foot to the pedal. After this didn't work I started to try and think of strappy things I might have on me. My headband came to mind and so I quickly put it to work. In retrospect this wasn't ideal and a toe strap from neutral would have worked much better had I requested and thought of it. Lessons learned: don't be lazy and think of toe strap. The only substantial break occurred at about the 50 mile mark, ut without the happiness of all parties involved it was soon aborbed by the Elita team chasers. I attacked a little before the climb to hopefully set up my teammates knowing that climbing with a broken cleat would be more challenging than usual. I quickly had 30 secounds but knew I needed 30 minutes to ever make the whole climb. I cheered my strong teammates on as they passed in their own world of pain. Caroline Alexander won followed by Alison Dunlap.
