Stage 5 - March 9: Berre
l'Etang - Sisteron, 194,2 km
A masterpiece
Matteo Tosatto won the fifth stage after a masterpiece in cycling tactics.
Three Fassa Bortolo riders came first into the final corner, 450 metres
from the line. Everybody's eyes were on the third of them, sprinter
Fabio Baldato in the blue and pink points jersey, expecting him to start
the sprint from there. He didn't. He just kept rolling out of the bend,
letting first placed Tosatto accelerate and gain top speed before anyone
knew what was happening. The 30 meter or so gap was enough to secure
the victory, to some extent helped by the fact that Bo Hamburger (Memorycard
Jack & Jones), first in the chasing peloton, pulled his foot out
of the pedal.
Live Report
Welcome to the fifth stage of Paris - Nice. Today the riders will
pass the highest point in the race, Col de l'Homme Mort at 1213 meters,
where 37 year old Thierry Bourguignon from Big Mat leads with more than
three and a half minutes. But this is a speciality of this little French
team, to attack early and offer a good show. They have raced the Tour
the last yars but will have problems now to qualify with two new French
teams, Jean Delatour and Bonjour, also competing for the three wild
cards for the tour. The team also uses a new type of electronic derailleur
by Mavic used before only in time trials. Now this minor team is allowed
to try it also in road races.
Benoït Salmon (Ag2R) is on his own a little less than a minute after Bourguignon and now 1.18 ahead of the peloton where Elli (Fassa Bortolo) attacks to get the last KOM points at the top of l'Homme Mort.
After the top Bourguignon is caught by Salmon and passed and soon caught by the peloton driven by the leader Laurent Brochard's team Jean Delatour. Gaumont (Cofidis) attacks and starts chasing Salmon. The gaps right now with 70 kms to go: Benoit has 26 seconds to Gaumont and 1.10 to the peloton which still is quite big. Kirsipuu has abandoned though.
Salmon is caught by Gaumont with some 60 odd kilometres left of the
stage. Salmon takes a rest a minute behind Gaumont, goes up to do his
turn, but Gaumont is soon up front again urging Salmon on.
The front duo now has a two minute gap with 59 kilometres left of the
race. None of them are threatening Brochard in the overall classement.
His domestiques have really proved so far that they can control the
race, although they were in trouble for a little while yesterday.
The speed is not to high in the peloton. Even Magnus Bäckstedt has
managed to take his 90 kilograms over l'Homme Mort without losing contact
with the peloton. The whole Jean Dealtour team is at the front now keeping
the pace. The gap to the leaders are more than two and a half minutes
ahead now.
The duo is not gaining anything more. There's a little climb up to Col de la Marquise (570 metres) to pass and then 14 kilometres to the first passage of the finishing line. Two laps of 19 kilometres remains then. In Noyers sur Jabron, with 52 kilometres left, the gap has shrunk to 2.12.
Jean Delatour gets some help now. Riders from Bonjour and FDJ are at the front. When tha last climb has started it's 1.47 now with 9 kms to the first passage in Sisteron. The average speed so far 38.5 kph. FDJ are driving the peloton right now, setting it up for Nazon in the sprint probably.
First passage of the finishing line, 38 kms to go. The huge Gaumont is doing most of the job but they seem doomed now, it's 1.12. No rush in the peloton though. The sprint is slightly uphill. Figueras and Steels are high up in the peloton and so is Stuart O'Grady. There is one quite steep climb on the lap suitable for attacks. Cars are passing the duo on the way up now. A sign that the peloton is approaching. Lots of white jerseys driving the peloton now, it's FDJ.
There's an attack in the peloton now, Fabrice Gougot (Credit Agricole) is attacking with a Postie, Luxemburg's Joachim who cannot follow. Gougot is catching the duo now, first Salmon and then Gaumont after the climb and the latter hangs on when Gougot comes when the climb has flattened a bit. There another attack from behind, it's Ekimov. And Gaumont gives up at the front.
The peloton doesn't allow Ekimov to escape and Christophe Bassons is driving now, he belongs to the half of Jean Delatour that rests in the beginning and now takes over the hard labour. Gougot finally gives up with 25 kms to go.
Gilles Maignan (Ag2R) attacks going into town and passes the line with a gap of around 20 seconds with 19 kms to go. The peloton split on the climb, it's now some 60 riders pasing the finishing line together. Maignan is one of the best time trial riders in France, and he won the Tour Down Under in January.
Lotto, with van Hyfte, is driving now, Tschmil is in the front. Marechal is also helping out and even Mario Aerts the best placed Lotto rider overall on the way up the climb again when Cofidis' Nico Mattan attacks to reach Maignan which he does almost immediately and Maignan can't follow.
Mattan is caught and Vinokourov attacks immediately when the climb flattens,
Bouvard hangs on to control for Brochard and another rider comes, a
Kelme trider who is Javier Otxoa. Vino takes the mountain prize and
it's ten points and they get a good gap. With ten kilometers to go they
pass a little village and then there's another little climb. Otxoa has
problems to follow and Bouvard is of course only tagging along. Lotto
and now Mapei are driving.
Lots of attacks in the peloton while Vinokourov is attacking once again to get rid of the others. Vino is one minute behind Brochard on 26th place. The gap is ten seconds now and still more atttacks in the peloton, Belli (Fassa Bortolo) tries in vain.
Five kilometers to go now and 15 seconds. The sprinter Figueras attacks in the peloton! Otxoa doesn't want to work int the front for some reason. Vino is still driving with the Spaniard on second wheel and Bouvard resting while Andreu is driving the peloton but Hundertmarck (Telekom) tries to disturb.
Three kilomters to go and 20 seconds for the trio and Otxoa doing some work now but not for long. If Vinokourov wants to gain some seconds he will have to do the job himself. And now he attacks, tired of the company but Bouvard follows easily.
It's nine seconds approaching the last kilometer, Vino attacks one final attempt but then Bouvard attacks instead, while Belli (Fassa Bortolo) drives the peloton under the kilometer banner and they catch Bouvard when Tosatto attacks. Hamburger pulls ut his foot but Tosatto wins by 25 meters.
Fassa Bortolo had three riders in a row towards a bend. Tosatto at front went right through while the others stopped pedalling and Matteo Tosatti got the little gap he needed. Excellent team tactics.
Brochard leads the points competition now, Baldato was busy helping Tosatto today in the sprint. And of course the overall classement for the white jersey.
All the major contenders came in with the peloton.
Bourguignon under pressure…
After the race Thierry Bourguignon revealed to Reuters' reporter why
he tried a 100 kms solo break early on: He had to get rid of the mental
pressure from an incident in the morning. The team car got stuck on
the motorway from Aix en Provence to the start in Berre l'Etang due
to an accident that had occurred some minutes earlier. The riders decided
to take down the bikes from the rack of the car and strted pedalling
the 20 some kilometres to the start only to be stopped by the police.
Biking on motorways is not allowed, not even at professional speeds.
Arguing started, especially between Bourguignon and a policeman the
tone was quite "monté" for awhile. Finally the riders were released
in time to make it to the start but their sports director Stéphane Javalet
was arrested long enough to miss it.
It took Bourguignon around 100 kilometres to calm down and when the peloton finally passed him after the mountain prize at l'Homme Mort he was his calm self standing at the road side, relieving himself of a non mental pressure that he obviously hadn't had time to take care of before the start…
