Franck Vandenbroucke will not be able to race the Paris - Nice after an accident in the stairway of his home Saturday morning on the way to the airport for the flight to Paris. The Cofidis team doctor Jacques Minuet has diagnosed a traumatism on the left wrist. The wrist hurts when moved and it is impossible for Vandenbroucke to start in Paris - Nice with the splinted wrist. The first x rays does not show any fractures but it cannot be excluded. More examinations will be done. It is still not revealed who will substitute him but Arnaud Prétot has been seen at the Cofidis hotel Saturday night.

The 67th edition the Paris - Nice, The Race to the Sun, once again will have its final finish on the Promenade des Anglais, as it used to be in the glory days of Anquetil, Poulidour and Merckx.

Organizer Laurent Fignon, who is running his first Paris - Nice as an organizer, never won it as a rider and his bad luck with American Tour winners seems to continue. The race could have been a revenge meeting between the two top riders from last year's Tour de France but first Alex Zülle, and then Lance Armstrong cancelled. Fignon has created a race that is a miniature Tour with some flat sprinter's stages, some for the climbers and two, short by all means, ITT's.

Last year's winner Michel Boogerd will not start and with the 1998 winner Frank Vandenbroucke out of the race Telekom's Kazachian Alex Vinokourov might be the man to watch. He declared at the team presentation in January that Paris - Nice was his goal for the season. So far though, he has not shown too much strength in the Spanish stage races but has probably used them as training only. Italian next door neighbors Casagrande and Savoldelli are also likely to have their say.
