Pantani pulls the pin,
Van Dyck leads
The Belgian rider, Hendrick Van Dyck, of the Palmans-Ideal team, has
become the first leader of the Vuelta a Murcia, after a fairly steady
first stage. Van Dyck's victory came after nearly five and a half hours
of racing, ending in a bunch sprint, without the usual big names up
there. The cyclists chose to take things fairly steadily in memory of
the death of Saúl Morales, and the action didn't start until kilometer
58 with an attack by (guess who?) Fabio Roscioli (Ita, Costa Almeria)
and Pedro Lopes (Por, L.A. Pecol), who managed to snare the intermediate
sprints. However, they were caught on the ascent of the Alto Campo San
Juan at 149 kilometers, due to the efforts of the Kelme squad.
Although numerous attacks were tried in the final kilometers, none
were strong enough to escape the fast moving bunch at this stage, and
it was an essentially complete group that arrived at the finish, with
Van Dyck taking the win from Marco Velo (Ita, Mercatone Uno) and Alessio's
Flavio Zandarin.
Hendrik van Dyck is riding his first season for Palmans after five
years with TVM. Despite his experience he is only 26 years old and might
have his best years ahead. The change from being a soldier the ranks
in the big team, to the better opportunities in the smaller outfit seems
to have done him good.
He has nine victories to his name, the most noteworthy probably E3-Prijs
Harelbeke in 1997, when he also won stages in the Tour of Sweden and
Trofeo Castilla y Leon as well as one of the Mallorca spring races and
the Nokere Koerse. Last year his only victory was in the Memorial Rudy
Dhaenens. He finished the year ranked 457 after being as high as 142
in 1997.
The win was almost overshadowed my the withdrawal of last year's overall
winner, Marco Pantani, who was complaining of back problems before the
race and did not start. He had experienced pain in his left side the
night before, and in the morning went to the hospital in Murcia for
tests, which confirmed that he had serious problems. He expressed his
regret at not starting the race, saying that "I am disappointed
not to race, for the organisers, my parents (Ferdinando and Toñina)
and my fiancee Cristina who were here to see me."
"It is not necessary to force things, and this will be the best
approach. Now the most important thing is to recover, and for that reason
I do not know when I will return to competition. In my initial program
I had Milan Sanremo, the Catalan Week and Tour of the Basque Country,"
he said.
Tomorrow's stage, from the Murcian capital to La Atalaya (Cieza) will
take the cyclists on a 156 km route involving three second category
climbs: La Garapacha, Peña Zafra and Ricote with the latter having an
average gradient of eight percent.
