Olano clinches victory
Pre-race favourite, Abraham Olano from the Spanish ONCE team won the
overall classification of the two day, three stage Criterium International
in France. He did so by finishing second to Laurent Brochard in the
final 11.5 km time trial on Sunday afternoon in Pau. Fourth place went
to Juan Carlos Dominguez (Vitalicio Seguros), who had enough advantage
to move himself into second overall.
Olano rode a balanced race to gain the overall, saying afterwards
that "It was on the Aubisque that I won the race. There were moments
there at which I was isolated and I had to take the responsibility on
the climb when Banesto attacked," referring to his fourth place on the
morning's stage, where he finished 14 seconds behind likely rival Alexandre
Vinokourov (Telekom), who was second on the stage. Olano had to ride
very conservatively, as most of his team were wiped out in yesterday's
crashes. He was reduced to just two other teammates today, and admitted
that he feared the 81 kilometre stage earlier.
However, his deficit was enough "damage control" for him to make up
the ground in the final time trial, beating Vinokourov by 29 seconds.
The latter managed to finish third overall as a result. The test, conducted
in the rain and cold in Pau, pushed Olano to the limit, as his countryman
Dominguez was also riding well. "In the time trial I wasted time at
the beginning, as there were many curves followed by pedestrian crossings
which were very slippery. At the end, I could not recover that disadvantage,"
commented Olano.
Since the start of the year, ONCE has gained seven wins in stage races,
and look set to continue their domination with Jalabert in top form
as well.
Mercury's Chris Horner (USA) rode well in the final time trial to
take third in the stage and eighth overall, capping off a very successful
first European weekend for the team.
