Criterium International - Cat. 2.2France, March 25-26, 20001999 Results Stage list Start list Past Winners PreviewThe Critérium International began as the Critérium International de la Route in 1932 which was started by Gaston Benac, the reporter for the newspaper Paris-Soir. It was initially thought of as a spring-time Championship of France following the roads up the Vallée de Chevreuse and finishing on the velodrom at the Parc des Princes. In 1978 it went to the three stage, 2-day formula. The parcours which involves rolling terrain, climbing and an ITT leads to a rider with complete skills being successful. The race is based in the south of France. Spaniard Abraham Olano starts in the two day, three stage race, the Critérium International in France as clear favourite, after his form this year has seen him win the Tirreno-Adriatico and the Tour of Valencia. He has kept his time trialling up, while improving his climbing - formerly his weak point in tour racing. He has lost weight without significant power, something that can be quite tricky to do. The race will see Olano up against Telekom's Alexandre Vinokourov, who will be their designated leader in the absence of Ullrich and Klöden. Also, Jean Delatour's Laurent Brochard will be there, aiming to capitalise on his Paris-Nice form. Credit Agricole have several strong chances in Julich, Vaughters, O'Grady and Boardman, but maybe not enough to challenge for the overall. It will also be interesting to see how US team Mercury does, in their first European trip for the year. The relative shortness of the tour may not be enough to get them up to Euro style racing so quickly, but they have already shown that they are no slouches when it comes to bunch sprints in the USA and in Langkawi.
