Stage 1: Tavira - Tavira,
177.6 km
Edo as expected
Spaniard Angel Edo, riding for the Portuguese team Maia-MSS, won unsurprisingly the bunch sprint of the first stage of the Volta ao Algarve. The hero of stage was however Boavista's Adrian Palomares who made a solo break and had as most a four minutes gap.
An incident at 123 kilometres, when some horses managed to run out in the road in front of the cyclists, split the peloton in two.
In the second half, arriving at 12.54 were names like Marcel Wust (Festina) and Leonardo Piepoli (Banesto), so Edo could outsprint the remaining 62 riders in the front peloton as expected.
