Elli too strong in Namur
Telekom's Alberto Elli won the 31st edition of the GP Wallonie, finishing
at the top of the Citadel of Namur, in Belgium. He was part of a four
man break that included Bonjour's Didier Rous, Lotto's Kurt Van De Wouwer
and Dave Bruylandts, Palmans, who finished in that order behind Elli.
The four escaped with 70 kilometres to go, along with Francaise des
Jeux's Sven Montgomery and Steve de Wolf. These two could not follow
after a while, and dropped off. The four had a handy lead to the peloton
of around two minutes before they reached the final laps of the Citadel.
Elli attacked his companions on the last cobbled ascent of the Citadel,
and held Rous off by eight seconds. In third was Van De Wouwer, a few
seconds back.
The race also saw Franck Vandenbroucke and Andrei Tchmil competing.
The latter was involved in a fall and gave up, although he wasn't seriously
hurt. VDB, who is attempting to ride the Tour this year, was not able
to manage more than 117 kilometres.
