A race of 228 kilometres in total saw Galdeano, a stage winner in the Giro d'Italia, beat teammate Javier Cerezo after a late solo attack. The race was held quite early in the morning starting at 8:00 am, ostensibly to avoid the heat. Nine laps had to be completed, and the peloton was fairly calm for the first part. In fact, it remained this way until three laps to go, when the attacks started in earnest. The place to attack was on the climb of the Fuensanta, which had a 6.6 percent gradient with quite narrow roads. The first riders to attempt an escape were Kelme's Roberto Heras and Oscar Seville, Vitalicio's Santi Blanco, Paco Mancebo (Banesto), and Luis Castellano (Matesica). They managed 15 seconds on the bunch but were not ultimately successful. They were caught after the descent, and more attacks followed so that the race decided itself on the last lap. Juan Carlos Vicario and Pereira (Portugal) attacked, taking Eladio Jiménez (Banesto), Iñigo Cuesta (ONCE) and Alvaro Gonzalez.de Galdeano with them. The five managed to get 39 seconds on the bunch, and on the last ascent of the Fuensanta, Galdeano attacked over the top. He quickly gained enough of an advantage, whilst the others were caught, and won convincingly by 9 seconds. The bunch sprint was taken by teammate Francisco Javier Cerezo, with Maia-MSS sprinter, Angel Edo in third. Vitalicio therefore won their third championship in the past three years in Spain, but will leave cycling at the end of the season.
