Over 370 riders lined up in 13 different categories to face strong coastal winds, twisty descents, and long climbs through the coastal redwoods on the Pescadero loop as it winds through the small coastal towns of Pescadero, San Gregorio, La Honda, and Loma Mar. The Pro/1/2 category in particular attracted a national caliber field including US and Canadian Olympic team hopefuls Derek Bouchard Hall, Mat Anand, and Eric Wohlberg, and top amateur riders from the GS Lombardi, Kissena, Spokesmen, and host club Alto Velo squards. 2000 Butternut Valley Bike RaceNew Lisbon N.Y., June 11, 2000 By John Alsedek, cyclingnews.com correspondent This year's race saw both the biggest fields and most competitive racing. 79 riders from throughout New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut participated in four different racing categories. Although there were a few rain showers, the event went smoothly and a good time was had by all. The Central New York Cyclist, the local USCF club that promotes the race, had an impressive showing: Ad Stabel, of Oneonta, won the Masters 35 + event; Michelle Costello, of Franklin, took 4th in the women's race; Nick Suozzo, of Franklin, placed 4th in the category 1-2-3 race; Brian Butts, of Cherry Valley, finished 2nd in the category 4-5 race; Tom Morris, of Sherburne, 7th in the Masters 35+, Mike Beggs, of Unadilla, 11th Masters 35 +, and Chad Butts, of Cherry Valley 9th , 1-2-3 event. The race course consists of a challenging 12.5 mile loop running through New Lisbon,N.Y.; 3537 State Route 51 North, to County Route 16, to County Route 14 to County Route 12 and then back onto Route 51.
