Peters and Uhl triumph in 5 race series

By John Alsedek, cyclingnews.com correspondent

With nearly $20,000 in prize money and valuable NRC points on the line, the American Cup, a six-day series of evening criteriums held in the greater Boston area, drew the best field in its four-year history. While defending champion Kevin Monahan (7 UP/Colorado Cyclist) was back with a much stronger team than last year, it was instead John Peters of the Mercury squad who came out on top, continuing his team's dominance of the U.S. domestic race calendar. Peters' win didn't come easily, though, as 'hometown hero' Frank McCormack (Saturn) fought him tooth-and-nail throughout, with the overall title being decided by the final sprint on the final day; Peters' victory in Sunday's Harvard Square Criterium gave him a narrow four-point winning margin over McCormack, with Frank's younger brother Mark (also Saturn) taking third overall.

Meanwhile, Sarah Uhl (Trek/CYBC) had a much easier time of things in the two-race womens omnium. With the majority of the country's top women cyclists competing in the HPL Womens Challenge, Uhl and her Trek/CYBC teammates were able to dominate the action; Uhl won both races as well as the overall, followed by Tiffany Pezzulo (Proteus) and Katrina Davis (IF/Wheelworks).
