Day 3 - June 25: Road race

Elite men, 202.4 km

Hamburger & Co

By Tomas Nilsson, cyclingnews.com correspondent

A break formed on just the second of eleven laps became decisive for the race. 13 riders made a gap to the peloton, among them Rolf Sørensen (Rabobank) and the Memorycarders Bo Hamburger, Nicolaj Bo Larsen and Jakob Piil. The group worked well together and held the lead until the eighth lap when the first attacks in the group came. Pill was the first one to go and he took Sørensen and Hamburger along but five other riders bridged after a while.

The next move came from Hamburger who went away with Piil. Once again Sørensen had to do the bridging job but this time he had title defender Nicolaj Bo Larsen on his wheel and found himself alone with three Memorycard riders. The trio attacked in turns and well over 20 kilometres from the finish Hamburger was the one that Sørensen couldn't follow. The margin was 1.56 at the finish. Larsen took the silver and Sørensen the well earned bronze.

"I'm proud to wear the "Dannebrog" in the Tour de France in a Danish team," Hamburger said after the race. Bjarne Riis wore it in 1996 when he traded it for a yellow in the alps. Riis also has played his part in Hamburger's victory. He has acted as advisor this spring and also as a pace maker on a motor scooter during Hamburger's training rides.
