Danish National Championships

Glumsø, Denmark, June 25-27, 1999

Men's Road Championships, Ringsted, 205 kms, June 27:

Lars Mikkelsen writes that "Revenge is a dish, best served cold", which today would indicate, that Nikolai Bo Larsen didn't win last year, simply to cool off. The year before he had won his first national title on that historic day, when first - in USA - Tyson got hungry early in a boxing match, and started eating Hollyfield, and later - in Denmark - presented the last real confrontation between Bjarne Riis and Rolf Sørensen, ending with a most unexpected championship to Nikolai Bo.

This race should also go directly into history, as the first Danish Championship, where you couldn't pick the winner by picking riders for one or two hands at most.

Most surprisingly, Team Home Jack & Jones ran with most everything that could be taken. Earlier in the week, they'd taken the team-event with several minutes, The ITT 1-2-3-4 and in today's race 1st and 2nd among 5 of the first 10 places. How it happened? Well, first the obvious group went away - Nikolai Bo Larsen, Mikael Kyneb, Rolf Sørensen, Jakob Piil and Allan Johansen. Later another 5-man group (Jacob Moe Rasmussen, Michael Sandstød, Christian Andersen, Danny Jonasson and Michael Steen Nielsen) left the main pack, and Team Home Jack & Jones decided to do what they could, to join the two groups. They succeeded, and then Danny Jonasson had a flat (that guy has been riding a great season on the Danish roads without really getting rewarded for it), and then there were 9!.

Instead of taking the entire song verse by verse, Nikolai Bo went off alone with three laps (of 15) to go, and with a lead of a minute and a half he managed to stay clear of attacks from not least Jakob Piil and Rolf Sørensen.

The best thing about it is, that this year his Championship jersey won't be covered by TVM commercials, so if Danish TV should change their current politic, and also show races filled with Danish riders, you'll finally get a chance to see the real red and white jersey again!

Men's ITT Championship, 38.4 kms, June 25

After last year's impressive performance in the world championships, no-one could have a doubt about the winner of this race, and then again! Sandstød explained after the race, that it actually wasn't his kind of route. He prefers to keep a steady pace for the entire trip, and this route was too crooked (technical) for that. Some were surprised to find Jesper Skibby come second, merely 32 seconds behind Sandstød. But in spite of his own dislike for the discipline (he doesn't like anything hard :-), there have been signs that that could predict a result like this.

Through Michael Steen Nielsen and Michael Blaudzun - both medal winners in the last few years, Team Home Jack and Jones secured the first four places. Jakob Piil, a recent stage and GC winner in the Swedish "PostGirot" came 5th and broke the Jack and Jones run.

Peter Meinert, who seems to be well on the road to recovery following his recent operation, had to accept 6th place, but he might find strength during Tour de France, where he just has been selected for the US Postal team.

But the story doesn't end there. Passing grand old time trialist Jøregen Bo Petersen - there were two young Chicky World riders, showing their strength in a discipline, that has so far not been their best suit - yet!
