Pantani self-distructs as Virenque has a grand day to win in Morzine

Drama was rife on the final climb of the 2000 Tour De France, the Col de Joux-Plane today, as Maillot Jaune Lance Armstrong (USPS) had a bad case of the bonk with 22km to go, as the steep climb began. He was dropped by Virenque and a resurgent Jan Ullrich, while Richard Virenque (Polti), warmed by the summer sun, charged ahead to win the stage. Armstrong was visibly in trouble as the tough ascent started; his usually impeccable form had deteriorated to swaying shoulders and bobbing head as the tough Texan struggled to stay in contact with the front of the race. So why did Armstrong crack?
"The problem was a bonk; I didn't eat enough and on the last climb I had no energy...", said Lance just after the stage finish. As the race went on and on across winding mountain roads, the race situation became ever more difficult for USPS to get bidons up to Lance, Kevin and Tyler. In fact, the Jury Of Commisaires communique after todays stage showed that both Livingston and USPS ds Bruyneel were fined for irregular feeding. But Armstrong showed his ever expanding Tour De France experience and maturity as a champion will in a moment of crisis; he kept his wits about him and managed to limit his losses on the hard charging Ullrich, who had some mechanical problems on the Joux-Plane, eventually losing time on Virenque when the Polti man finally flew the coop.
Where was Marco Pantani (Mercantone Uno) when his new nemesis Armstrong finally cracked ? The Italian super-climber had spent most of the day on the attack, as he and 2 others escaped on the first Col of the day, and made Lance and USPS teammates Tyler Hamilton and Kevin Livingston ride the hard tempo behind Pantani to ensure he didn't ecape. Although Lance paid the price for the hard chase on the final climb, Pantani was way back on that climb as well, losing 13'44" on the stage and falling completely out of the top 10. Pantani's strategy to attack Armstrong took its toll on the Maillot Jaune, but it also backfired on the diminutive Italian climber, who simply lacked the strength to take advantage of the situation.
After a moment of silence by the riders for the 12 year old boy who died of injuries from a TDF caravan vehicle on 14 July, the riders took the start towards Morzine. After an early fall by Serrano (O.N.C.E.) who abandoned, as well as falls by Pantani and Maillot Pois Botero (both rejoined), there were a few early attacks, but when Toto Commesso (Saeco) attacked just after the Albertville sprint (at 53km), his move stuck. Toto was soon joined by (surprise!), a Kelme rider, Pascual-Llorente.
At the foot of the cat. 1, 1650m Col des Saises, a 15.1km ascent @ 6.5%, the duo had 1'15" on the USPS led peloton. Suddenly, a flash of pink was at the front on the early slopes of the Saises. It was Pantani and he was attacking with 120km to race! A few riders tried to follow the Mercantone Uno man, but couldn't do much, and Pantani caught and passed Commesso and Pascual-Llorente further up the Saises.

Pascual-Llorente jumped on Pantani, while behind, Virenque and Ullrich made a few moves, but USPS brought them all back; except Pantani. Pascual-Llorente was caught by his counter-attacking teammate Escartin and Herve (Polti), ahead of the 28 strong front group. Over the summit of the Saises, Pantani led the chasing trio by 31" and the USPS chasers by 1'04". The identical situation and time split prevailed over the next climb 26 km later, the easier cat. 2 climb to 1,498m of the Col des Aravis (8.2km @ 6.4%). The trio (by now without Pascual-Llorente) had a 1'05" lead with 90km left to race.
USPS team riders Hamilton and Livingston were riding hard tempo behind the dangerous trio of Pantani, Escartin and Herve. But the break was handicapped by the fact that Herve wasn't working to protect his leader Virenque; neither he nor USPS wanted Pantani to get too much time.
Eventually, the Polti man not pulling up front and the USPS boys pulling behind thwarted Pantani's plans. By the summit of the cat. 1, 1613m Col de la Colombiere (11.8km @ 5.8%), Pantani and Co's lead was dropping fast. By the foot of the long, fast Colombiere descent in Cluses, with 47km to go, the three fugitives had been absorbed. Pantani's attempt to upset Armstrong's apple cart had not been successful, but the hard chase by Lance and his USPS teammates would have it's own payback later on down the road to Morzine.
As the regrouped peloton entered Cluses, Rous (Bonjour) went away, joined by Kivilev (AG2R) and Trentin (Caldirola). The trio made good time over the tired peloton up the penultimate climb of the day, the cat. 3 Côte de Chatillion-sur-Cluses (5.1km @ 5.4%), with a lead of 30" over Polti policeman Herve and 1' over the USPS and now Telekom-led peloton. Down the riders went into the long, faux flat valley towards the base of the Col de Joux-Plane. The deceptive hors categoire col (11.8km @ 8.5%) was just ahead, as Bölts and Guerini (Telekom) joined USPS in pursuit of the three fugitives.
Now all the cards in today's game of bike poker were ready to be played at the foot of the Joux-Plane. Kivilev, Rous and Trentin were still away, and suddenly, just was the climb started, Pantani folded. He just started to ride at a slower tempo, letting Armstrong, Virenque and Ullrich pound up the first slopes, shedding Beloki and Maillot Pois Botero. The lead quartet was down to the Maillot Jaune, Ullrich, Virenque and Heras (Kelme). But Armstrong was not looking good; his face white, his shoulders struggling to keep the power on as he had run out of gas. Heras took off and got a gap, closing fast on the lead trio as Virenque and Ullrich started to pour on the power to try and crack the American.
With 20 km to go, Heras was finally in front with a 30" lead on the Maillot Jaune group. Behind, Ullrich went to the front and put the pressure on Armstrong, who simply couldn't follow the German's pace. The American rose from the saddle, and quickly sat down again when he realized that his legs were just not there anymore. Slowly, powerfully, Ullrich went after Heras, who was only 59" behind him on GC, while Virenque sat on the Telekom man's wheel. Armstrong slowly, painfully lost ground and first Escartin, then Beloki passed the Maillot Jaune. Virenque left Ullrich in pursuit of Heras as Ullrich tried to keep him in sight.
At the top of the 11km ascent, the situation had stabilized. Virenque had caught Heras with 2km to go. They led Ullrich by 39"; the German had been less than 30" down on the front duo, but at the KOM, he made a bike change. His special brake pads for his hi-profile carbon wheels had worn down so much from all the day's descents that Ullrich was concerned that he couldn't stop on the wild plunge to Morzine.

Beloki, Escartin and the ubiquitous Herve were at 1'03", while Conti (Caldirola), Botero, Moreau (Festina) , Atienza, Trentin and the Maillot Jaune Armstrong were at 2'18. Armstrong's effort to dig deep down had limited his losses to 1'30" on Ullrich and his race lead was safe. Virenque and Heras bombed the tricky descent with a fast-closing Ullrich taking chances on fresh brakes. Heras was trying to shake out leg cramps with 2km to go; perhaps this distracted him as he led into the sharp left hander at the bottom of the descent and didn't make it, crashing spectacularly into the barriers and breaking his bike.
Virenque scampered to an uncontested win in Morzine; his biggest victory in three years since his win over Ullrich in Courchevel. "It's a great moment for me, " Virenque crowed after his win. "I'm really motivated now...I've got to thank my teammate Pascal Herve for his work. Now I have to do a great time trial."
Heras managed to get back on his bike, but Ullrich caught him and powered in for 2nd ahead of the Spaniard. Kelme had another great day, taking over the team GC lead from Banesto. Despite his big time bonk, Lance showed his guts and class to defend his Maillot Jaune with distinction.
