Day 1 - July 15: Individual Time Trials, PeterboroughHughes and Wohlberg dominate day 1 of the NationalsDouble Olympic bronze medallist Clara Hughes of Winnipeg won the women's 27.2 kilometre women's individual time trial Thursday at the Tim Hortons Road Nationals cycling competition. Hughes, who swept gold in both the road race and time trial at last year's worlds, clocked 38 minutes 01 seconds. Double world junior champion Genevieve Jeanson of Lachine, Que., was second in 38.07 while Leah Goldstein of Vancouver was third in 40:10. With 800 metres to go, Hughes was forced off course and onto an outside lane on which she would complete the race. A pick-up truck was stopped on the lane Hughes was suppose to enter however she was directed to go off course by officials. A protest to disqualify Hughes was not upheld. "I just kept going wondering what to do," said Hughes. "I didn't know if I should turn back or there'd be a break in the fence I could go through. I lost about five seconds because of the traffic. I was the fastest rider out there and everybody saw that. It was one of my best time trials in a long time. I would have liked it to be totally clean cut though." Jeanson, a World Cup race winner this spring, continued to established herself as a serious threat to grab one of three spots on the Olympic team following Sunday's road race. Two of the three road race qualifiers will also race the time trial at the Games. "Genevieve has a lot of character," said Hughes. "She showed she's a world class rider." Lyne Bessette of Knowlton, Que., one of the pre-race favorites, was fifth. In the men's race, Eric Wohlberg of Levack, Ont., won the time trial for the fifth straight year. "I've got a pretty good streak going," said Wohlberg, who won the Dayton Pro-Am last week and has earned three professional stage race victories . "I never go in very confident but in a time trial you got more control over things than in a road race. My ride was pretty basic: I went as hard as I could from start to finish." Canada didn't earn any Olympic spots in the men's time trial however four spots are up for grabs in Sunday's road race. The top-two gain an automatic berth and the two others are decided by a selection committee. Wohlberg's top rivals for spots will include speedster Gord Fraser of Nepean, Ont., Brian Walton of Delta, B.C., an Olympic silver medallist on the track in 1996, and defending national champion Czezlaw Lukaszewicz of Chateauguay, Que. "There's a lot of Canadians riding very well right now," said Wohlberg, the Commonwealth Games champion in 1998. "I wouldn't want to be in the selection committee's shoes right now."
