3rd Rotterdam Tour - CDMNetherlands, August 27, 20001999 Results Results Preview Start list Past Winners Beltman does it for the DutchChantel Beltman of the Dutch national team won round six of the women's World Cup, the Rotterdam Tour in the Netherlands. Beltman finished solo, 2'40 ahead of Farm Frites-Hartol rider, Leontien van Moorsel with Acca Due O's Goulnara Ivanova taking third. It was the first Dutch win a World Cup event, and what better place to do it than on home territory? The weather conditions were cool but dry as the 51 rider field took the start of the 140 kilometre race at a fairly steady pace (36 km/h for the first hour). The attacks started to come after that in the vicinity of Goeree Overflakkee, but the decisive move came at Acthuizen just after the halfway point (73 km). Four riders escaped: Leontien Van Moorsel (Farm Frites-Hartol), Chantal Beltman (Dutch National), Goulnara Ivanova (Acca Due O), and Gabriella Pregnolato (GAS) and quickly established lead that went up to 2 minutes after 79 kilometres. All teams were well represented, and the four were not going to be caught. The leaders entered Rotterdam and were on the closing laps when with 23 km to go (Erasmusbrug) Beltman attacked. In just one lap, she stretched her lead to 2 minutes and held that advantage to the finish. Behind her, Leontien Van Moorsel easily won the group sprint for second, making it a Dutch 1-2. Chantal Beltman thanked Van Moorsel for her win afterwards, "Leontien gave me the chance to win my first big international race. Her part in my victory was great. I thank her very much." This cooperation should help the relationship between Leontien and Chantal. After Chantal's selection for the Olympics Van Moorsel said that she prefered Elsbeth Vink (who is now a reserve for the road and the MTB). Beltman was up until now only a supporter for Van Moorsel. National coach Jean-Paul van Poppel was happy as well, "This was a perfect test for the Olympics. This race gave the team spirit a push. In Australia we have time to make a close team, but this already takes us a long way." Diana Ziliute (Ltu) retained her overall lead in the World Cup standings, although she lost a little to Pia Sundstedt, who could still win with a good race in Embrach, Switzerland. PreviewThe second last round of the Women's World Cup (Road) will take place in Rotterdam in the Netherland. Despite the proximity to the Olympic Games, many of the world's top women will be competing, including current series leader and world number 2, Diana Ziliute (Acca Due O). She will be up against the winner of round five, Petra Rossner of Germany, as well as Dutch favourites, Leontien Van Moorsel, Mirjam Melchers and Mirella van Melis. Other top riders include Germany's Ina Yoko Teutenberg, GAS Sport riders Pia Sundstedt, Greta Zocca and Gabriella Pregnolato, and Nürnberger's Jacinta Coleman. The field is of good quality but not huge. Organiser, Henk Voogt didn't change his mind about the three Dutch women's teams, RWC Ahoy, Ondernemers van Nature and Westland Wil Vooruit. They will not be allowed to start, even after the letter from the UCI this week. The World Cup race is one of the last races before the Olympics for the women. The parcours has been significantly altered from last year, as the race will no longer start and finish in the town of Spijkenisse, but instead on Coolsingel, in front of Rotterdam City Hall. In addition, the final 20 km will be run over four laps of a circuit in the city centre. The wind is expected to play a big part in determining the outcome of the 140 kilometre race as is normal in the Netherlands. Looking at the overall standings of the women's World Cup, Diana Ziliute has a good chance of sealing her victory in this round as she holds a commanding 71 point lead over Pia Sundstedt. With 75 points for the win, Sundstedt will have to do something special in these final two rounds to overtake the Lithuanian who has made this a major goal for the year.
