Bartoli and Casagrande
duel it out, but Belli triumphs
The 51st edition of the GP Citta di Camaiore turned into a tactical
duel in the closing kilometres between Tuscan rivals, Michele Bartoli
(Mapei) and Francesco Casagrande (Vini Caldirola). However in the end
it was Fassa Bortolo's Wladimir Belli who outwitted them both, jumping
away in the final 500 metres to take the win from Bartoli and Casagrande.
The trio composed the final decisive break that formed from a larger
group on the last climb of Monte Pitoro. Massimo Donati (Vini Caldirola)
had initiated the move, but fell behind later on the climb. The three
had no danger of being caught, and they began to play tactics in the
finale. Casagrande tried to go in the last kilometre, but Bartoli closed
it, and Belli took his chance. It was the 30 year old from Bergamo's
second victory of the year, after he won a stage in the Tour de Suisse.
"He was gone because he had to go," said an annoyed Bartoli at the
end. "Bravo Belli, there is nothing more to say. I felt very good today,
and I'm therefore sorry to lose it."
Casagrande: "I tried to attack. Then when Belli went, it was up to
Bartoli to follow. I do not have any regrets though."
The day also saw a long attack by Andrea Tafi who was trying to earn
some extra selection points before the final Italian Olympic team is
named on August 10. He was caught with 13 kilometres to go but showed
himself to be strong. The five at the moment are: Casagrande, Bartoli,
Pantani, Di Luca and Bettini, but head coach Antonio Fusi will not finalise
these for another week.
Mario Cipollini also returned to the fray today, riding 100 kilometres
before quitting.
