Report:

It was considered by observers to be a wonderful race. It was characterised by constant attacking and counterattacking. At the end the average speed was a record for the event - a very fast 45.962 km/h. And that was notwithstanding the fact that the peloton had to climb Monte Pitoro 6 times. Ultimately, the race was won on the 6th climb of Pitoro, some 15 kms before the end. Francesco Casagrande, the most aggressive rider of the day, launched a splendid solo attack on the climb. He was quickly covered by Pavel Tonkov. But Casagrande was also assisted by some superb work from Massimo Donati.

32-year old Donati then went on to take his first major victory of his career after he dropped Casagrande and Luca Belluomini in the closing stages. Donati's fine form took him from 16th to 3rd place in the Coppa Italia, a competition based on national Italian races.

Casagrande came in second and said he was very happy for Donati. The win, he said, confirmed Donati's dedication.

Massimo Podenzana retained his lead in the Coppa Italia.
