Jelly Belly Men's Pro-Am Challenge

Canadian Gord Fraser sharpened his legs up in preparation for a possible second consecutive US Criterium Championship by winning the 50 km Jelly Belly Pro-Am men's challenge. The race was fast as several riders from every team were willing to try their luck at a breakaway, the most significant of which was a group that included Mercury's Henk Vogels and 4 others. But the constant $100 primes made everyone willing to keep the pace high and not allow more than 10 seconds.

At 5 laps to go, it was a battle of trains with car rivals, Saturn and Mercury in opposition again. Saturn looked quite good with one lap to go, but the Mercury boys gave Fraser yet another good leadout with Chris Horner, Henk Vogels, Mike Sayers all prominent.

Day 2 - August 20: USPRO, USCF Elite Men/Women's Championship

Bouchard-Hall takes the win and the title

Mercury's Derek Bouchard-Hall took out the 2000 USPRO criterium championships ahead of his teammate, Gord Fraser in an exact reversal of last year. Although Fraser was certainly the favourite for the event, Bouchard-Hall was a deserving winner and benefitted from the work of his teammates. Meanwhile, Saturn riders Antonio Cruz and Frank McCormack took 3rd and 4th, not quite quick enough on the day to dislodge the Mercury train. Three Olympians in the top three showed the calibre of the field in Downer's Grove, Illinois.

The race was quite controlled for the first half of its 100 kilometres, as everyone eyed off the competition for the finale. Then the serious attacks started, with a break of 10 going with 21 laps to go (33 km). Although the break was well represented by Mercury, Saturn, Navigators and a Shaklee rider, they refused to work as a certain Gord Fraser was in tow. Saturn drove the peloton behind to chase and they caught them after 8 laps.

After this, the tempo was kept high and any dangerous moves were neutralised, and there were just 19 riders left of the main field with one lap to go. Mercury and Saturn duelled, with the former, yet again, putting one over the boys from Saturn. Horner and Vogels led out the team to the final corner, with Bouchard-Hall first out and staying there until the end. Fraser took second this time, with Cruz third.

USCF Men (amateurs) - 80 km

Bahati makes the transition

Mercury/Fuji rider, Rahsaan Bahati became the second junior rider (after Steve Scuron in 1985) to ever win an Elite National Championship (on the road) today in Downer's Grove. The Mercury JET's (Junior Elite Team) won five national Junior Championships this year, but for the South Central Los Angeles rider, this was his first Elite National win.

The 80 kilometre event was fiercely contested by those who survived yesterday's heats, and it was a battle between Mercury and Net Zero for much of the race. Although Net Zero had the numbers, on the last lap a crash messed up the situation and Bahati managed to avoid it, taking the win from Net Zero's Jaime Palonetti. In third place was CCB-Volkswagen's Shawn McCormack
