Report

The first attack came at 19 kilometres by Leaper, Gualdi, Perez and Righi but they didn't manage to get more than a hundred meters in front before Mercatone Uno, in defence of leader Borgherese, reeled them in. About halfway through the race, Nauduzas (Selle Italia) in the white jersey (neo-pro) tried an attack with Klemencic (Vini Caldirola) and Baldato (Fassa Bortolo) but they were not able to hold the field off past the mountain prime at Mendola.

Only Barbero lasted and he had eighteen seconds to a group with Tonkov, Zuelle, Piepoli, Miceli, Simoni and nineteen others. He was finally caught at 179 kms by Simoni, Tonkov, Rebellin, Axelsson, Piepoli, Sgambelluri, Noé and Basso. The group had 44 seconds down to a chasing group with Savoldelli, Zuelle and Gontchar among others. Some hundred meters from the last mountain prize, team mates Tonkov and Noé collided and Tonkov fell bringing Simoni, Piepoli and Axelsson also down on the road. No severe injuries however but Tonkov lost contact.

Noé took the GPM ahead of Sgambelluri and Basso. With 20 kms to go Noé, Piepoli, Simoni, Rebellin, Axelsson (leader on the road), Basso, Sgambelluri and Conti had 38 seconds to a grupetto with leader Borgheresi, Savoldelli and Zuelle. Tonkov trailed by 1.45.

The leaders were caught at five kilometres and a little peloton of 28 riders was formed. In the final climb Piepoli and and Barbero attacked off the front. Borgheresi came in with a handful of others at 14 seconds, still in the lead.
