Wesemann in a Telekom steamroller

29 year German professional, Steffen Wesemann continued his excellent year so far by winning the 85th edition of the Cat 1.3 "Rund um Köln", just beating another in-form rider, Palmans' Hendrick van Dyck. The two had escaped with xx kilometres to go and van Dyck was at least able to prevent a Telekom 1-2-3 as the German team filled 4 of the top 6 places. Wesemann, who has won a stage in the Tour Down Under as well as second in Het Volk this year, takes his tally to two wins (but a lot of high placings).

Telekom were well placed for the win, as they made the move at the 80 kilometre mark with Wesemann, Aldag, Bölts, and last year's winner, Jens Heppner all in nine man break. Four in nine is fairly good odds and they made the most of it into the final three laps of the 5.2 kilometre finishing circuit. A three man break escaped here containing Thierry Marichal (Lotto), Wesemann and van Dyck. Marichal was later caught and the two in front were left to contest the sprint, which Wesemann won comfortably in front of 10,000 people.

"I am overjoyed that I have finally got another victory this year," said Wesemann afterwards. "The team was behind me a little today, and I knew that I wasn't the slowest in the group. I hope I can keep my form for the peace race."

His teammate, Rolf Aldag (3rd) said that "It was excellent that we could give Steffen a home victory today, and Erik managed without his captain's role. Wesemann was one of the five best riders this spring, and he earned his success today."

Pre race favourites, Erik Zabel and Marcel Wüst were not in evidence at the finish, with the former presumably wishing to recover from a somewhat taxing Classics season so far. Zabel will ride the Henninger Turm on May 1, before taking a short break from racing. For his part, Wüst missed the critical move at the 80 kilometre point and was not able to get across.
