Castanheira wins in last ditch effort

Young Portugese rider Bruno Castanheira (La-Pecol) won the first major race of his career after he finished 3rd in the last stage of the GP M.R. Cortez/Mitsubishi. The 149.6 kilometre stage, from Pêro Pinheiro to Cacém had five mountains to overcome, and managed to carve the bunch down.

The decisive escape came with 40 kilometres to go, when Youri Sourkov and Bruno Castanheira, from La-Pecol, and Spaniard Jose Gutierrez (Kelme) left the peloton. Yellow jersey holder, Serguei Smetanine (Benfica) tried his best to catch the trio, but he had no help from his team and arrived more than one minute after them. Gutierrez won the stage and Castanheira the race.
