Race Report

In the 196 km Giro dell'Emilia, Dutchman Michael Boogerd sent an ominous warning to his rivals with a solo breakway win, showing he is building good form in the lead up to the World Road Racing Championships.

Boogerd won the 83rd Giro dell'Emilia by attacking on the final climb up to San Luca and built a winning margin of 20 seconds to Massimo Donati and 40 seconds to Marcello Siboni.

None of the two Italians are mentioned in discussions regarding the Italian selection for the World Championships. Tomorrow's race from Milano to Vignola will be the last chance for the Italians to take a place in the squad. Francesco Casagrande came in more than a minute after the Dutchman at fifth and can be sure of a place in the national team. Davide Rebellin, who abandonned the Vuelta ought anyway to be on the squad. Otherwise today's race merely dimmed the sight for the Italian management when it comes to the rest of the team. Expect a lot of Italian attacks from Milan to Vignola.
