Stage 15 - October 24 - Melbourne Criterium 42.5 kmsReport - Blaudzun takes the Sun Tour (and saves the team)Danish rider Michael Blaudzun (Home Jack & Jones) wrapped up the VicHealth Herald Sun Tour over the two Czech riders Tomas Konecny and Jan Hruska (Typepower) following the fifteenth and final stage of the 1300 km race, a criterium through the streets of Melbourne.The Division 2 team from Denmark came to Australia with the intention of winning the Sun Tour,as if they rode well they could gain UCI points to ensure they are elevated to Division 1 status next year, which should also result in additional sponsorship funding. According to Rob Gaylard, the press officer attached to the Sun Tour, "You've rarely seen a more ecstatic podium". Blaudzun and team-mates Nicolai Bo Larsen, Christian Andersen and Mikeal Kyneb also received the Team Classification Award (Latvian rider Arvis Piziks broke a collarbone in a crash early on in the race). "They came here with the intention of winning the tour and they did that in convincing style. There's far greater riches awaiting those (Home Jack & Jones) riders than the $104,000 on offer at this tour," he said. In fact, it's believed the elevation to Division 1 could result in at least an extra million dollars in sponsorship funds due to the higher profile races the team will be allowed to enter next year. At the same time, it was a day of mixed blessings for the winner of today's stage, Swiss rider Michael Themann. Although he was riding in the Sun Tour for the Malaysian Airlines team, in Europe he rides for the Swiss team Ericsson-Villigier, which has been forced to quit due to sponsorship problems (see News). Themann won the final stage by two seconds from Kiwi veteran Graeme Miller (NZ) SEW - Eurodrive - Avanti, with young Irish rider Ciaran Power (Latrobe - Moe) taking third in the bunch sprint behind Themann. As it happened at the start, the Danish riders were on the front of the bunch putting on a very strong show in defending their leader, with Nicolai Bo Larsen the strongest, keeping a steady pace for the field. Then Australian rider David McKenzie realised he was fast running out of stages if he was to win one this tour, and with a burst he was off the front. He was soon joined by the bunch, and again he broke away which he held for a few laps. But the Danes reeled him in once again. Following McKenzie there were numerous attempts to break clear of the bunch, but all to no avail as the Danish riders stayed at the front and defended the leader's jersey. At four laps to go it was shaping up for a big bunch sprint, with all the sprinters lining up on the front for a position and the domestiques bowing out. At this point Themann made a big attack and although several tried, none could get his wheel and McKenzie was forced to lead the pursuit. Yet the Swiss rider stayed clear with Miller cleaning up the bunch sprint for second place. At the presentation of the final awards, Queensland sprinter Robbie McEwen took both the KOM and the Sprinter's Trophy, but he was unable to talk a great deal as he had lost his voice. He did say, however, that it was only the points that kept him going, otherwise he would have withdrawn several days ago due to a cold. Now all he wants is to go home to the Gold Coast in Queensland and soak up some sun and recover from a gruelling year, which included winning the final stage of this year's Tour de France on the Champs-Elysees. Graeme Miller, although he is 37, is looking for a berth on the Olympic squad next year, as are the Home Jack & Jones riders. PRIZES: Blaudzun received the winner's cheque for $10,000 to share with his team-mates, with McEwen receiving $1000 for both the KOM and Spinter's Trophies. The race organisers paid down to 50 on GC, with second-place Tomas Konecny receiving $4000 and team-mate Jan Hruska $3000. The best-placed Australian-based rider, the veteran Eddie Salas, won $1000, while the riders in the Most Aggressive rider Award shared a total of $4820. A further pie of $9720 was divided among the winners of the countless town and mountain sprints, with Robbie McEwen featuring prominently in both categories. Each stage winner pocketed $1000, with a total of $30,000 handed out to the stage winners. FOOTNOTE: Yesterday's ITT was a tough stage with a long Cat 2 climb in the last 15km. The Czech riders riders were in top form as was Kyneb, with an strong easterly wind developing in the afternoon, creating a tailwind for the riders higher up in the GC who left later in the stage.
