Creil - Noyon, 193.5 kms:

In the first kms the race was very active. 15 riders went clear at km 10. Over the summit of la Côte de Labruyère (km 41.5), Silovs was first followed by Micheal Rich and then Emmanuele Magnien. After this difficulty was negotiated, there were 9 riders leading the race - Barthe, Pronk, Lhoir, Marichal, Magnien, Streel, Silovs, Sweet and Rich. At the first sprint premie (for time bonuses) at Clermont (km 53.5), it was Silovs leading from Barthe and Magnien. The break had 35 seconds on the peloton at this point.

Leading into the second sprint premie at Bresles (km 72), the peloton came back together and the sprint was won by Marc Streel in front of Raimondi and Australian Robbie McEwen. The pace slowed dramatically with a speed of 28 km/h being imposed from the front. At km 103.5, 11 riders attacked but were brought back. At Maignelay-Montigny (km 111), Streel and Durand attacked and were soon joined by Andy Flickinger, Kroon, De Waele, Backstedt, Bouyer, Joachim, Kyneb, Contrini, Rastelli, Cretskens, Auger, Pillon and Ludewig. They had gained a gap of 0.35 leading into Tricot (km 116.5). At this point, the Casino team put the hammer down and the peloton followed suit. At the third premie sprint at Ressons-sur-Matz (km 128.5), Contrini won from Backstedt and Flickinger. The break had 15 seconds at this stage. But the peloton came back together less than 10 kms later (km 138).

On the next major difficulty, the Côte de Sainte-Marguerite, Silovs, Genty and Gwiazdowski attacked and passed over the top in that order. They had a gap of 0.20. The peloton was being controlled by Thilloy, Marichal and Detilloux and this allowed the three up front to go out by 1.05 at the foot of the next climb, the Côte de Thiescourt, which was the last major difficulty for the day. Over the top it was Silovs, Gwiazdowski and Genty in that order and they had 0.40 on the peloton. They attacked hard on the descent and built the lead to 1.10. Gwiazdowski also decided to go it alone and attacked his breakaway partners. Silovs and Genty were then joined by Thilloy, Marichal and Detilloux, and then Boardman and Roesems broke from the peloton.

At Tracy-le-Mont (km 163), Gwiazdowski was caught by the 7 other attackers (Silovs, Genty, Thilloy, Marichal, Detilloux, Boardman and Roesems) and the 8 riders began to work well together. At this point the peloton was 0.45 but soon after it was down to 0.37 at Pontoise-les-Noyon (km 175). On the first time past the finish at Noyon, with 13 kms to go, the leading group had 0.30. A major accident in the peloton however helped them.

In the final sprint it was Thierry Marichal, who attacked hard and gained 20 metres on the peloton who caught the break in the last metres of the race. In the mass sprint for 2nd it was Estonian Jaan Kirsipuu who triumphed.
