14th Clásica Internacional de Alcobendas, Cat 1.4

1998 Results     Past Winners     Report: Spanish rider Juan Carlos Dominguez (Vitalicio) won the prestigious Clásica Internacional de Alcobendas for the second year in a row. The race over 185 kms was held in the Madrid area. The race was controlled in its early stages by the stronger teams like Vitalicio Seguros, ONCE-Deutsche Bank and Kelme-Costa Blanca. The first climb of the day - the Cat 1 Puerto de la Morcuera came at km 64. Abraham Olano was prominent but Vitalicio Seguros assumed responsibility for controlling the race after Igor and Alvaro Gonzalez de Galdeano, attacked with Jose Luis Rubiera, Martin Perdiguero and Gonzalez Arrieta. The escape prompted the unrepresented teams, especially Banesto to react. The move was neutralised and there was a period of inactivity in the race. The next major attack came on the Alto de Canencia when Fernando Escartin, Marcos Serrano and Juan Carlos Dominguez went clear. A major crash occured on the descent with Isaac Villanueva being taken to hospital with multiple contusions and concussion. As the lead peloton came into the streets of Alcobendas, Juan Carlos Dominguez attacked and was able to hold off the fast-finishing chase group. Madrid, 185 kms: 1.
