Preview

Belgian Franck Vandenbroucke (Cofidis), the Italians Andrea Taffi (Mapei-Quick Step) and Fabio Baldato (Ballan Alessio) and Chris Boardman (Crédit Agricole) are among the favourites to take the 45th edition of the Quatre jours de Dunkerque that begins on May 4. 16 teams with 8 riders each (6 French, 6 Italian, 2 Belgian, an American and Danish) will take part in the race which was won last year by the Kazak rider Alexandre Vinokourov (Casino).

The Belgian leader of Cofidis Franck Vandenbroucke (Cofidis), has indicated that he wants to win the race will be assisted by Peter Farazijn and Laurent Desbiens, who won the race in 1993.

The parcours which crosses the region known as Nord-Pas-de-Calais with a brief incursion into Belgium, suits the sprinters. It will thus allow German Marcel Wust (Festina), the Italians Nicola Minali (Cantina Tollo) and Mario Traversonni (Saeco) and Frédéric Moncassin (Crédit Agricole) to show their talents in finishing.

Stage 1, Dunkerque - Loon-Plage, 184 kms:

Italian Nicola Minali (Cantina Tollo) won the sprint finish in Loon-Plage after the 164 kms first stage from Dunkerque. He took the rose leader's jersey for GC and won the mass sprint in front of two other fast sprinters Estonian Jan Kirsipuu (Casino), - the current leader in the Coupe de France - and Italian Silvio Martinello (Polti), who won last year's first stage sprint contested over the same route.

There was no action in the first 130 odd kms and it was only after the two côtes were passed that the pace increased. French sprinter Emmanuel Magnien (Française des Jeux) won the mountain sprints and has the jersey in that classification.

After the second climb, Cédric Vasseur (Crédit Agricole) attacked with former French road champion Stéphane Barthe (Casino), Latvian Juris Silovs (Team Home-Jack & Jones) and the Italians Fabio Sacchi (Polti), Andrea Brognara (Cantina Tollo) and Davide Bramati (Mapei). The 6 riders never got more than 22 seconds in front and were caught with 7 kms to go. At that point, Frenchman Pascal Chanteur (Casino) attacked with Laurent Lefèvre (Festina) and Belgian Marc Streel (Team Home-Jack & Jones). The 3 riders had a 15 second gap but were caught with 2 kms to go as the teams lined their sprinters up for the finale. This is one of the attractions of the "4 Days" - the huge mass sprints and the work leading up to them by the big combines.

The second stage is over 176.7 kms between Grande-Synthe (Nord) and Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais), with 3 climbs Saint-Etienne-au-Mont, Camiers and Mont-Lambert, and two sprint bonifications.

Stage 2, Grande-Synthe - Boulogne-sur-Mer, 176.7 kms:

Italian Andrea Ferrigato (Ballan) won the second stage from Grande-Synthe to Boulogne-sur-Mer (176.7 kms) alone and took over the rose leader's jersey. et a pris le maillot rose de leader au classement général. Ferrigato attacked 30 kms from the finish and was 0.51 in front at the end of a group of 40 chasers. Second in the sprint was Alexander Gontchenkov and third was Nicola Loda. He attacked on the second last difficulty of the stage, the côte de Camiers. He was followed by Cédric Vasseur and two other French riders Stéphane Barthe (Casino) and Arnaud Pretot (Cofidis), and the Dane Bo Hamburger (Cantina Tollo).

He attacked this group on the climb of Mont Lambert and only Vasseur and Hamburger could follow. But then he dropped them and rode home alone.

The success of Ferrigato and the podium domination of his Ballan Alessio team was stark. Vasseur had to be content with the white mountain's jersey.

Chris Boardman lost all his chances in the race when he finished more than a half an hour behind in the last peloton.

Stage 3, Boulogne-sur-Mer - Béthune, 180.1 kms:

Former French road champion Stéphane Barthe (Casino) won Stage 3 of the Quatre Jours de Dunkerque which was raced between Boulogne-sur-Mer and Béthune over 180.1 kms. Barthe won the sprint in front of Italian Endrea Leoni (Liquigas) and Latvian Arvis Piziks (Team Home-Jack and Jones). Italian Andrea Ferrigato (Ballan), finished with the same time and preserved his leader's jersey on GC.

The stage was marked by the abandonment of Belgian Franck Vandenbroucke, who is currently leading the World Cup rankings. He cited tiredness after an early season start and some intense racing. The Cofidis rider will take a month off to rest and focus on his major objectives for the rest of the season, most notably the World Championship and the later World Cup races. He will return to racing in June for the Tour of Luxembourg.

The fast pace set by the peloton stopped all the attacking moves and made up for the 15 minutes delay at the start due to a rider protest. The day before some 75 riders had failed to finish inside the time limit and the organisers had threatened to throw them out of the Tour. Finally, they relented and imposed a fine of 800FF for slow riding.

Stage 4, Béthune - Marchiennes, 78 kms:

Young French rider Jimmy Casper (La Française des Jeux) won the sprint finish in front of Estonian rider Jan Kirsipuu (Casino) in Stage 4 of the Quatre Jours de Dunkerque, contested over 78 kms between Béthune (Pas-de-Calais) and Marchiennes (Nord).

Initially, Kirsipuu was declared the winner but a photo finish ruled in favour of Casper (20-years old). It was Casper's first professional victory. Italian Andrea Ferrigato retained the leader's jersey for overall GC.

The first stage for today was marked by a large crash at the front of the peloton just 20 kms before the finish. The crash saw Lithuanian Arturas Kasputis taken to hospital with serious injuries. The accident also ruined the chances of overall success of Latvian Juris Silovs, who was 5th on GC at 0.57, and Frenchman Cédric Vasseur, who was 6th at 1.00. Both riders were able to recover but lost 2 minutes as a result of the delay.

English rider Chris Boardman, also fell with them and arrived at the finish some 7 minutes in arrears. He had already abandoned any hopes he had of figuring in the overall GC. He is now more than 30 minutes down overall. But this accident also may damage his hopes in the ITT this afternoon to be held over 27 kms.

Stage 7, Gravelines - Dunkerque, 166.1 kms:

The Danish team Home-Jack & Jones, scored its first professional success
when Michaël Sandstod won the 45th edition of the Quatre Jours de Dunkerque.
The team made its debut last season. Sandstod, a 30-year old neo-professional, took the
overall GC after Stage 7 from Gravelines to Dunkerque finished in a mass sprint.
He has matured slowly in cycling. He was part of the bronze medal winning team
time trial at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and did well in the points race
at the 1996 World Championships at Manchester.

Last year, as captain for Team Chicky Worldm he became 2nd at the Circuit des Mines behind the Russian Alexandre Vinokourov. Also last year he came 8th in The World Championships ITT after having won the Danish ITT Championship over the last two years.

The star of the weekend though was Estonian Jan Kirsipuu, who won the sprint on Saturday at Mont-Rouge and on Sunday in the streets of Dunkerque.
