Preview:The Oceania International Grand Prix of Cycling will be held in Sydney, Australia between December 8th and 16th. The events consist of mountain bike, track, and road races for men and women, as well as the latter two for U19 men. The track competition will start the games, running from December 8-12, and will be the first event held on the Olympic Dunc Gray Velodrome. It will be an important competition in terms of next year's Olympics, with qualification spots up for grabs to the winners of each event. Australia has qualified riders in every event at the Olympics, however they still have the opportunity to qualify three more positions in the 4000 m individual pursuit, the keirin, and the 500 m women's time trial. In these events, Australia will be relying upon Brad McGee, Shane Kelly and Michelle Ferris to win. There will also be an "international" track competition run concurrently with the Games, which will feature individual pursuit, sprint, points, and madison racing. Those riders not competing for their countries in these events at the Oceania's will have the opportunity to strut their stuff in the international competition. The mountain bike cross country events will be held on the Olympic course at Fairfield City Farm on December 11. They are also another chance for countries to win Olympic spots - Australia will be trying to qualify a maximum of three in the men, however they already have the maximum of two qualified in the women. For the extra men's spot, they will need a top 30 place from Cadel Evans, as well as another top 30 and one top 10 position. This is quite likely considering the absence of the European and American stars, but anything can happen. The countries competing in the mountain bike road competitions are Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Fiji, Guam, and Samoa. The road races and time trials will not be held on the Olympic course in East Sydney however, but in Sydney's West at Bringelly. They consist of 20 km time trials for the women and U19 men, a 30 km time trial for the men, and a 150 km road race for men, and 90 km races the women and U19 men.
